Earlier this year, CD Projekt Red was the victim of a massive data breach that resulted in the sale of the source code and the manipulation of other information related to the company's games, such as Cyberpunk 2077 and a video with a compilation of bugs that company already knew before launching the game and that you can see here.

And while some members of the gaming community joked about it after the release of Cyberpunk 2077, many failed to understand the dangerous side of this kind of hack: employee personal information being sold, including home addresses. But the Polish studio is far from the only one to be hit by this type of breach, as now another big company is reporting data theft.

According to the initial report, hackers are looking to sell the source code – not unlike what happened with the Projetk Red CD – for an undisclosed dollar amount. The total amount of leaked data is supposedly around 780 GB. So that means, in terms of volume, EA Games was hacked but didn't have massive amounts of leaked information. The problem in this case is not the amount but what was stolen.

In a report published in Motherboard, that this time Electronics Arts, EA Games was hacked. Of the stolen data, there is the FIFA 21 source code, as well as a plethora of valuable tools for developers, not limited to the Frostbite engine, developed by DICE and which the company uses in its Battlefield series games.

If EA Games was Hacked, is my data safe?

EA is investigating the incident. A spokesperson told the with the BBC: "We are investigating a recent intrusion incident on our network where a limited amount of game source code and related tools were stolen." They also added that no player data was accessed and, at the moment, there is no reason to believe the player's privacy is at risk. EA also confirmed that proper authorities have been contacted.

"This incident demonstrates the fact that even high-tech organizations are vulnerable to potential data breaches.” said Erich Kron known as a 'security attorney' for Game Informer. "In this case, thes bar codes source for various products, some very valuables is expensives guidance on a prodution of intellectual property, foRAM stolens by cybercriminals and offereds on the open market.”

"Interestingly, at this point, it looks like they haven't tried resell the data back to EA, but chose to offer them pelthe highest bid.", he continues, "If this data includes a significant amount of proprietary information, it could be valuable to competitors or could include information or vulnerabilities that could be used in future attacks against EA products or customers with EA games installed."

He added: “Unfortunately, these successful attacks are often a by-product of human error. Reused passwords or collected credentials are common ways for attackers to gain access to systems and networks. For that reason, it is smart for organizations to regularly educate employees about potential attack vectors and the importance of being vigilant for attacks that can target them.”

"In addition, robust Data Loss Prevention controls can help detect when sensitive data may be leaving a victim's network and play an important role in an organization's layered security strategy.”, finished.

Now the question remains: Will we see a new FIFA 2021 clone on the market released by any developer who bought EA's data? Or will it be used to create cheat codes and will we soon see a flood of hackers in the game? Tell us what you think there in the comments and read more about EA on Our site.
