In the latest episode of Dying 2 Know, renowned composer Olivier Derivière (Streets of Rage 4, Vampyr, A Plague Tale: Innocence) talks about the music of Dying Light 2 and details the construction of a special instrument that creates extraordinary sounds for the game, as well as sharing the inspiration behind Dying Light 2's main theme, “Run, Jump, Fight”.
Created from an old bicycle wheel, a steel cable, various metal wires and other discarded objects from the city, the Electric Psalter evokes the ingenuity of Villedor's survivors, as if it were taken directly from the game world. Designed by musician and instrumentalist Nicolas Bras, who specializes in do-it-yourself equipment, the strings of the Electric Psalter, which can be plucked or bent, correspond to specific characters in the game. The top of the psaltery makes a soft rattling sound when turned, and it can be heard in-game as the player makes decisions that will affect the story, characters, or the world at large.
To bring the ambitious Dying Light 2 Stay Human soundtrack to life, Olivier Derivière and Techland collaborated with one of the best orchestras in the world, the London Contemporary Orchestra. Together with Abbey Road Studios, Olivier and the Orchestra recorded the entire score, creating a sound experience players will never forget.
“It supports the narrative by generating nostalgia at certain times, encourages bravery in battles by adding adrenaline with the right melodies, and energizes the player, pushing him to push harder as he parkours around town,” said Adrian “Pyza” Ciszewski, Creative Director of Dying Light 2 Stay Human. “This collaboration between us made the sound evolve according to our artistic vision of what we'll see on screen and integrate seamlessly. It was indeed an ambitious project, but we had a lot of fun, and seeing the end result was definitely worth the effort.”
In revealing Dying Light 2's main theme, “Run, Jump, Fight,” just before the final episode of Dying 2 Know, Olivier said, “It's been an amazing journey to work with Techland in creating a unique soundscape for the game. and pushing the boundaries of open-world music design.” The track's strings, brass and drums evoke running, jumping and fighting, respectively. Who is Olivier Derivière – Composer of the music of Dying Light 2
Hailed by MTV as the “eclectic daredevil of game music,” BAFTA-nominated composer Olivier Derivière ('Get Even', 'Remember Me', 'Assassin's Creed IV – Freedom Cry') has scored award-winning songs for animations, movies and video games and is widely acclaimed for its sophisticated composition and innovative approaches to connecting music with gameplay.
Derivière is driven by his passion for providing players with a unique musical experience that truly reflects each game, musically and directly in sync with the gameplay itself. Classically trained Derivière often combines traditional musical elements with unorthodox sound techniques to create an authentic score that fully immerses the player in gameplay and story through his neo-classical music styles.
Recording with the world's best orchestras and world-class musicians including the Philharmonia Orchestra at Abbey Road and Air Studios, the GRAMMY® award-winning choir Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares, the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Children's Choir of the National Opera in Paris, Derivière's pioneering soundtracks have been nominated by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts and honored by the International Film Music Critics Association.
