Pete Hines, senior vice president of global marketing and communications at Bethesda, says the new Indiana Jones game is in the early stages.
Bethesda, along with Wolfenstein developers MachineGames, have been working on a new game of Indiana Jones, famous movie hero played by Harrison Ford (Star Wars), for some time now, as revealed in a trailer released earlier this year. The table full of references and the ending with the hat and the whip certainly got fans excited, but it's good to hold that excitement for a while longer.
A new interview with Pete Hines, Bethesda's senior vice president of global marketing and communications, just threw a bucket of cold water on fans with the company's statement confirming that the Indiana Jones game is far from ready for release.
Indiana Jones isn't necessarily the strongest character in video games, despite a number of games released in the late 80s and early 90s, along with a number of educational games in the 2000s. the Lego Indiana Jones games published by LucasArts for PC and consoles.
Now LucasArts (renamed Lucasfilm Games) is back, along with Bethesda and MachineGames, to deliver a totally original Indiana Jones game, with a teaser trailer posted on Bethesda's official Twitter account, but that's just for excite fans and create hype over the release, but the effect may have been the reverse on some people.
With the announcement of the new Indiana Jones game, many of the company's fans have expressed concern about how this new game will impact the development time of other Bethesda titles such as Starfield and The Elder Scrolls 6 (which has also been revealed to be far away of the launch). Much of this concern is due to the fact that Todd Howard, CEO of Bethesda, is the executive producer of this new game, despite also leading the other big IPs in the studio.
New Indiana Jones Game Not Priority
So to soothe these fans, Pete Hines, Bethesda's senior vice president of global marketing and communications, stated that while Howard is executive producer on the project, "His primary focus remains directing the upcoming Starfield and TES6 games." , which will not be affected by the new Indy game.
Considering how early in development is the Indiana Jones game, which doesn't even have a title yet, Hines was reasonably cautious about the details in his interview with GameSpot. The game has been described as being in the “very, very, very early stages”, with Hines emphasizing that they are based on how far the game's content is when it comes to making concrete announcements.
With Starfield being announced at E3 and The Elder Scrolls 6 probably the top priority after him, Bethesda Game Studios is pretty busy, and MachineGames probably has another Wolfenstein being developed during that time as well, which means the new game from Indiana Jones may take a few years to arrive.
While Indiana Jones fans might be disappointed to hear that Bethesda's vision of the adventurous archaeologist won't make it to the PC or consoles anytime soon, people looking for other Bethesda titles will likely be happy to hear where the studio's priorities lie. An Indy title will certainly make a great AAA video game, probably with a new franchise coming to compete with Tomb Raider and Uncharted, however, it's no surprise Bethesda is focusing on a new IP like Starfield or her popular one First Elder Scrolls series. MachineGames' Indiana Jones game is currently in development and with no release forecast.
