Pokémon MOBA is announced by the Pokémon Company

Pokémon Presents was focused on a single ad for the entire duration of the event. The Pokémon Company has announced a new game called Pokemon Unite. At first the team-based cooperative MOBA game is being developed in partnership with Tencent and Timi Studios, responsible for Call of Duty Mobile.

So Unite will be free to play on Nintendo Switch and iOS / Android phones, in addition to supporting playback on multiple platforms. No release date has been given yet, but we've taken a long look at gameplay - that's what we know so far.

The new Pokémon battles

The matches are 5v5 and take place on a map similar to those seen in other MOBA games; divided into two parts that represent your teams. Each side is filled with several control points that can be used to score points. Battles will take place in real time.

As you progress through battles, your Pokémon levels up and learns new moves, and each Pokémon has a unique Unite move. But unlike ordinary Pokémon, there are no advantages of any kind. The side that scores the most points at the end of the match wins.

The online event also featured a debut match between two teams of five, complete with commentators. The action looked wild and fast, with players competing for control points to score goals.

The tall grass is used to block vision and create ambush opportunities, and when you defeat a wild pokemon, you "capture" it. As well as all points scored in the final minute are worth double points.

Pokemon presents was focused on a single ad for the entire duration of the event, where a new game called pokemon unite was announced.

Pokémon in the game

First, a character selection screen was shown where there were several Pokémon already known, such as Pikachu, Snorlax, Charizard and Lucario. At the start, some started out as non-evolved versions, like Squirtle, which evolved into Wartortle, although the selection screen only shows the final evolved form, Blastoise. Pikachu notably did not evolve into Raichu. Furthermore, evolutions do not seem to include so-called “babys”, such as Pichu or Munchlax.

We also saw some Pokémon represented on the battlefield like Bewear and Toxicroak, but as these weren't on the selection screen, they may have been AI controlled monsters. Check below for a complete list of all Pokémon that have already been featured in the game:

Player-controlled Pokémon:

  • Snorlax
