Sony made a $ 250 million investment in Epic Games, granting it a minority stake in Epic Games and opening the door to deeper collaboration between them. Specific plans for the future have not been revealed; but Epic said in a statement that the investment will mix “Sony’s core portfolio of entertainment assets and technology; Epic’s social entertainment platform and digital ecosystem to create unique experiences for consumers and creators ”.
“Epic's powerful technology in areas such as graphics puts them at the forefront of game engine development with Unreal Engine and other innovations. There is no better example of this than the revolutionary Fortnite entertainment experience. ”Said the president and CEO of Sony Corporation, Kenichiro Yoshida.
“Through our investment, we will explore opportunities for additional collaboration with Epic to delight and add value to consumers and the industry in general; not only in games, but also in the rapidly evolving digital entertainment landscape ”.
"We share a vision of 3D social experiences in real time, leading to a convergence of games, movies and music," he said. "Together, we strive to build an even more open and accessible digital ecosystem for all consumers and content creators."Said Epic CEO Tim Sweeney.
Sony and its PC games
Sony recently demonstrated a growing interest in PC games, the previously exclusive PS4, Horizon: Zero Dawn, is now available for PC, but it will probably be even more relevant to the partnership is Epic's focus on bringing its technology to the world film production. The Unreal Engine website discloses its resources for “episodic animation, live action blockbusters or short form content” and for a company like Sony; which, in case you don't know, makes some films here and there, could be a great asset.
Also interesting, as noted by Daniel Ahmad, senior analyst at Niko Partners on Twitter; is that while Sony’s investment is not much less than Tencent’s in Epic in 2012; is getting a much smaller share of the company.
