The Last of Us Series: Number of Episodes Revealed!

Craig Mazin, producer and screenwriter of the HBO series The Last Of Us, gave an interview to the podcast Scriptnotes and revealed that the first season of the series will have a total of 10 episodes.

In the interview, Craig also revealed that four of the ten episodes are already written and ready for production, when aspects such as budget and costumes will be decided. The start of recordings for the series was confirmed from a post made a few days ago on Instagram by Gabriel Luna, who plays Tommy.

The post image shows part of the cast inside a car with the caption “I already love these guys” and the hashtag #thelastofus.

More information such as the length of each episode or even the content of the series itself were not revealed. What is known is that the series will "expand" the universe created in the game, not cutting, but developing and filling some scenes.

Another fact that was revealed by Craig is that the series will have even more directors involved, but still no names confirmed. So far, Kantemir Balagov (Beanpole) is one of the names already confirmed to produce the pilot episode. Jasmila Žbanić and Ali Abbasi are also confirmed to direct the series.

What We Know About The Last of Us Series

Neil Druckmann, director of The Last of Us and The Last of Us Part II games is directly participating in the scripting of the series, alongside the aforementioned Craig Mazin “(Chernobyl).

Cast already revealed:

  • Pedro Pascal (GoT, Narcos, The Mandalorian) as Joel Miller, sensitive single father, who has to reinvent himself after terrible events, and turns cold and violent;
  • Beautiful Ramsey (GoT, The Worst Witch) as Ellie, a 14-year-old orphan girl who is immune to the infection plaguing society;
  • Merle Dandridge (Broadway musicals) as Marlene, the leader of Fireflies, a militia group. Marlene takes care of Ellie after her mother's death. A curiosity about this role is that Merle also brings Marlene to life in the game itself;
  • Gabriel Luna (Agents of SHIELD), as Tommy, younger brother of Joel who ends up joining the Fireflies;
  • Nico Parker (Dumbo) as Sarah, Joel's daughter.

Just over six months ago, the synopsis of the series was released by HBO, check it out:

“The story takes place 20 years after modern civilization was destroyed. Joel, a tough survivor, is hired to smuggle 14-year-old Ellie out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts out as a small job becomes a brutal and exciting journey as they traverse the United States and depend on each other to survive.”

This synopsis only confirms the information that the production will be based on the first part of the game, The Last of Us (2013). Little is known about the plot itself, only that some game scenes will appear, as well as scenes entirely created just for the series, just based on the game's story. It is not known, therefore, whether the first season will completely cover the game's plot.

As for filming, Luna has already taken it upon herself to tell us about the beginning of it, and it is expected that it will last until next year, possibly even June 8st, 2022, which further confirms the theories that she will tell about all the events of the first game, which lasts more than a year.

Filming is taking place in Calgary, Canada.

The Last of Us

The Last of Us is a post-apocalyptic action-adventure-survival game for PlayStation 3 produced by Naughty Dog and distributed by Sony Computer Entertainment in 2013.

In the plot, we follow the spread of a fungus that, when infecting a person, transforms them into a cannibal monster, called the Infected, which ends up destroying most of society. Joel is one of the survivors of this chaos, and he proposes to help Ellie, a young girl who is apparently immune to the fungus, so that she can hopefully save humanity.

With a lot of shooting, blood and action, the game was very well received by critics, reaching grade 95/100 on the famous Metacritic.
