Eight years ago, The Sims franchise was hosting its newest and longest chapter that garners fans, critics, controversy, and loads of content in The Sims 4 on PC

Exactly on May 6, 2014 the world received the newest version of the most famous life simulator in the gaming world. The Sims 4 on the PC, developed by Maxis and distributed by Electronic Arts, it had more up-to-date graphics for that generation of PCs, much prettier (especially compared to The Sims 3, which the puppets seemed to wear rubber masks), a different camera and the promise of many hours of gambling with the life of the friendly sims.

Of course, for those who were used to the previous game, which already had five years of content, bug fixes and DLCs, the most current chapter actually looked pretty empty and not enough content for good gameplay, however, they weren't at all. wrong. The Sims 4 arrived without an open world (which was a game revolution), a map with no color in the details, and yet without the “baby” stage for new sims (the newborn automatically became a child).

Between mistakes and successes, the game today accumulates a huge fan base and players, controversies and an incredible collection of DLCs that expand its content in infinite hours and its price in many reais. So after eight years, with the game getting closer and closer to the end of its lifecycle, can we already tell if it's a good game or not? The Sims 4 is a 3D simulation game, with isometric view most of the time, but it's still possible to zoom in or out too far from the character and, for the first time in the franchise, even play with 1st person view. You can create your character however you want, with a powerful creation tool, which allows you to just “grab” a part of the character's face or body and pull or push, shaping it however you want, without the sliders of its predecessor .

The game takes place in an alternative version of the previous games, not being considered canonical in relation to the previous ones (which can be organized in The Sims 3, The Sims 1 and The Sims 2), presenting different stories for the most known families of the game, as the Caixão family (with Vladmir, Laura, Cassandra as a teenager and Alexandre as a child) and the Caliente family (with Dina, Nina, Katarina and Don Lotário).

Making an effort, it's even possible to put Sims 4 between 1 and 2, since in Sims 1 Cassandra was a child and in 2 a young adult, 4 with her as a teenager isn't so strange. But, in addition to these, the game still brings several other new and captivating families, adding even more characters with its expansions. Knowing, interacting and relating to all these characters is what makes you want to set up your character right away and enter the world of The Sims and stay there for many hours. And to do this, you can rely on CAS (Create a Sim) in a revamped version and the most complex of all versions. You can “grab” a part of the Sim's body or face and pull, push, or shape any way you like, like modeling clay, giving character creation much more freedom than in any other chapter in the game.

While other games had some pre-set templates and sliders for you to create your Sim, here the game simply lets you model it however you like. Other things like your sim's traits, aspirations, voice tone, name, and clothes and hair are also there for you to define as you like.

However, some things were removed like signs, styles, biography or your sim's family tree were removed or moved elsewhere. Creating supernatural creatures like mermaids and vampires or dogs and cats (if you have the DLCs) is also done in the sim builder. Particularly, if you're used to the Sims 4 CAS, you'll find the previous creators quite weak, even though you have more options for customizing the character.

Each DLC adds new content, and the bigger ones in particular add new worlds, some that you can live in and some that are called “Vacation Worlds”, where you can spend a few days but not permanently move there. Adding DLC ​​means adding new content, new sims and new gameplay to the game, with new ways of doing things or new options. For example, the base game doesn't have the option of transforming into a vampire or wizard, as there were in previous games in the franchise, but all of that added over time. Some things took a while to come, like pets and universities, but they eventually made their way into the game. The ever-expressive Sims, creatures never overly nuanced, are nevertheless more diverse, smarter, and more capable, while the world they live in is almost heavenly.

The sun always shines (if you don't have the Seasons pack) on its clean, tidy, spacious, and beautiful neighborhoods, and the game is packed with appliances, conveniences, and dozens of wallpaper, flooring, and decor designs. The series has always been a capitalist fairy tale, a world where good always wins, where there is no privilege, homophobia, prejudice or patriarchy and where everything can be achieved with hard, honest work in the end.

It feels more social and much more alive, although it's not the famous open world of The Sims 3, it's still very vast and you can see a lot of people living their lives in the game's neighborhoods.

While there are some innovations Sims now have more ways to do things, they don't necessarily have more things to do. They aren't significantly different and, left to their own devices, the Sims aren't terribly interesting characters yet. They may spontaneously argue with strangers or play video games for so long they wet their pants, but they won't make significant choices in life without you interfering.

These life-defining moments will come from your planning and micro-management, which is sometimes very necessary because it can take a long time to perform some everyday activities. You'll see sims you've known since childhood growing old without acquiring any skill points or realizing any aspirations in life. They will get married, have kids, but life will basically remain the same and the only person who will prosper is you and the sims you control. There are mods that fix this, but let's just stick with the game here.

Are there any bugs? Of course. The last one I heard made sims piss fire! Sims sometimes struggle to move from place to place and, even in the familiarity of their own homes, behave awkwardly around furniture. Sometimes doors and windows disappear as the camera rotates. Sims forget or ignore the commands you gave them. They talk to people through walls. He has the terrible habit of going up to wash dishes in the upstairs bathroom when there is a beautiful sink or a state-of-the-art washing machine in the kitchen.

The most annoying thing is when your sim just crashes because it has started talking to some sim that is far away and leaving the lot. Fortunately, few of these bugs break the game and sometimes almost fit the eccentricities of Maxis' silly creations. What Maxis has created is a smart structure, mostly polished and very smart for a game that, once again, is a dangerous waste of time.

The Sims 4 is still a new experience every time you play but it's also predictable, enjoyable, comfortable, and rarely over-stimulating. Perhaps it was EA and Maxis' attempt to bring a new audience to the franchise, as much of what gamers raved about in the 3rd game was not present at its release and yet they tried to create a story disconnected from the previous ones. And maybe it worked.

A Review Without Nostalgia

I'm one of those fans who started with the fourth game in the franchise and kept coming back and I think the last title is the best game in The Sims. Of course, we tend to like the game more as we know it, but I'm not completely foreign to previous games. At the time of the release of The Sims 3 I also started playing and I couldn't understand anything and, frustrated, I just abandoned the game and even had a bit of resistance to starting the fourth game.

I created sims, I didn't have any explanations about families, about relationships, about how to play and a few speech bubbles with a light bulb. In the end, I didn't know how to go to work, my birthday was a flop and nothing makes sense in that crazy game. I'm also not a complete stranger to The Sims 2. I also played for a while and there was nothing special about the game.

Lots of cool content in The Sims 3

And after I got engaged with The Sims 4, I went back to Sims 3 and 2 and didn't find it any better than the current one. In addition to a greater number of bugs, The Sims 3 has an absurdly time-consuming loading screen that drags even further thanks to a little game of finding things on a screen with a static image. The Sims 3 is bad for that? No way. But, taking the glasses off nostalgia, The Sims 4 is a much better and more stable game.

The Sims 4 doesn't have an open world and doesn't have the amount of content the Sims 3 has amassed in its lifetime, but it delivers a far less buggy experience with a lot less content that's just there to fill you up! Seriously? Did anyone actively play a zombie? He's cool, but he wasn't so cool as to say he's missed in The Sims 4.

Is open world cool? Of course, but what's the point of having a huge open world that takes you hours to get from one point to another on the map, and when you do, you find yourself in an empty lot and when the sims arrive it's almost midnight, the place will close and you have to come home and catch your sleep to work the next day.

But, after all, is it good or not?

Most of the simmers' complaints come from the fact that the Sims 4 doesn't have a lot of things they had in previous games, like the thief or cars or a bunch of other animals, and don't realize what they got in return. Smarter sims, much prettier graphics, a much more stable gameplay, and a much more powerful CAS than anything seen in the franchise. I trade the open world for the sims' intelligence to multitask without thinking. These complaints are motivated much more by nostalgia for the previous game than by its real usefulness or function in the game.

Of course, not all complaints are unfounded. The lack of more interesting content and DLCs that deliver much weaker content than previous versions are a serious problem. While the previous game had a DLC that featured two or three new game mechanics, current DLCs come with much less content and sometimes content is cut and sold as a DLC DLC, as is the case with The Sims 4 Cats & Dogs – My First Pet.

The DLC Journey to Baatu, a clear way to do merchandising for the new Star Wars park at Disney, is content that hasn't been requested by virtually anyone and only those who are a big fan of the Star Wars franchise will get excited, but it's not much different than what was made in The Sims 3 with the Katy Perry's Sweet World! It's a niche product, made for fans of the franchise or the singer.

Yes, we don't want a game that's all fragmented and sold out. We don't want a million Stuff and Kit Collections. We do want quality content for the high price that is charged for the game (which by the way, if you want to buy it in full it will cost more than BRL 3.500), but I, as a fan and player, don't just want a repeat of everything that has been made before recycled. I'd rather see new and creative things than have, for example, zombies in the game. I don't miss the thieves either, thank you very much!

Analyzing the game coldly, it does have problems, but it has successes and evolutions in the franchise that place it, in my opinion, as the best chapter number in the franchise. I'm not struggling here in Urbz, The Medieval Sims ou The Sims Bustin' Out. and yes considering only the 4 games in the main series, The Sims 4 is the best of them and an excellent gateway to the series.

To say The Sims 3 is better is to view the situation with a nostalgic lens on the series when PC games weighed at most 3GB and DLCs had tons of content for just over 700MB. The graphical and AI evolution of the characters took their toll, both in space and in monetary values. All games are getting (unfortunately) more expensive and heavier and charging The Sims 4 to deliver the same amount of content as a The Sims 3 DLC did for the same amount you paid in 2004 is to miss a time that doesn't come back more.

Of course, the uninspired content that is currently being released is a problem and the values ​​practiced by EA are unrealistic for the Brazilian reality, you can't deny that. The Sims 4 does have its flaws, but not mirroring The Sims 3 with updated graphics isn't one of them. Comparing The Sims 4 with The Sims 3 is an unfair comparison. He must be judged by his own mistakes and successes, and the game itself has many more hits than mistakes. Mistakes exist far more from EA and its business system than from the game.
