Finally we will have Elden Ring

Elden Ring was announced during the Game of Thrones fever, the soulslike game went years without a novelty, until Summer Games Fest 2021

It seems that the author of The Chronicles of Ice and Fire, George RR Martin, didn't spend all that time when he was supposed to finish his work by playing with giant plastic balls. Apparently, to the dismay of fans who want to read the end of stories in Westeros, he was also playing with video games. But in a little different way.

You'll stay all day with music in your head

The writer's explosion in popularity took place during 2011 and 2019, when the American channel HBO adapted into a dark series, full of death and sex, one of the author's books in a series format called Game of Thornes. The series was extremely successful during the 8 years it was on the air, generating even more noise thanks to its somewhat dubious ending for fans.

In addition to the explosion in popularity of her books, the HBO series also catapulted the fame of actors like Emilia Clarke (who later played a role in the Terminator Saga), Jason Momoa (Aquaman, Justice League and Conan), Maisie Williams ( which went to the movie New Mutants) and Kit Harington (which will be in the upcoming Marvel Eternals), to name just the most well-known franchises to nerd and geek audiences. In addition to these, these actors were in another series of roles that got thanks to the showcase that was Game of Thrones.

But the author of the books has also achieved his share of stardom, and from that was born the invitation to collaborate with Bandai Namco and FromSoftware president Hidetaka Miyazaki, known as the creator of the Souls series, in creating a new soulslike-style game, called just from Elden Ring.

Become the Lord of the Elden Ring

And after the controversial end of the series, there were still fans who were thrilled to know more about the world of Westeros and wanted to drink more from the George RR Martin fountain, and FromSoftware knew that, so taking advantage of the hype at the end of the series, we had the first announcement of the company's new game, highlighting Hidetaka's name and, after a few seconds of suspense, George RR Martin.

And just like the series that was on hiatus for a year, the game was silent for 2 years (except for that little leak a few months ago), until yesterday, during the Summer Games Fest, when the first trailer for Elden Ring game gameplay has finally been released. The trailer with a dark mood and fights with giant monsters, very soul style.

The release date has also finally been announced, which means we don't have much time to wait to play it either. The game is scheduled to hit stores on January 21, 2022.

There's a lot going on in the trailer, and most of it will look pretty familiar to anyone who's played a souls game in the last decade. The mood of the Elden Ring trailer makes it look a lot like the original Dark Souls, with destroyed cathedrals and grotesque monsters and narrators who would need a cup of water urgently.

There are some important details to note, which give clues to what we can expect in the release of Elden Ring:

  • The Ghosts are back, which indicates that PvP and co-op are back in familiar form as well. Will we have a ghost horse?
  • Our character jumps a lot to dodge enemy attacks, indicating that the weapon system might be similar to that seen in Dark Souls 3 (but perhaps more refined as in Sekiro?);
  • There will be combat mounted on our horse (which looks like a hornless deer). The horse jumps and even flies up steep mountains with the help of a kind of magical seal on the ground (Skyrim's horses didn't need magic to climb vertical mountains);
  • Are we traveling and exploring some kind of reality other than the “ordinary” for the character? It's a common theme in FromSoftware's games (like, for example, in Dark Souls we started with a kind of undead), and the shattered and floating remnants of a cathedral suggest that's what we'll see around here;
  • Werewolves and Fallen Kings – Elden Ring is looking like a Dark Souls and Bloodborne mashup. We still don't know much about the story, but with the collaboration of George RR Martin we can expect something good in this regard.

A synopsis of the story appeared on Bandai Namco's Elden Ring page as well.

 The Golden Order has been broken.

 Rise up, Maculated, and be guided by grace to wield the power of the Pristine Ring and become an Elden Lord in the Middle Lands.
In the Midlands ruled by Queen Marika, the Eternal, the Pristine Ring, the source of the Erdtree, was destroyed.
 Marika's offspring, all demigods, claimed the fragments of the Pristine Ring known as the Great Runes, and the mad taint of her newfound strength unleashed a war: The Shatter. A war that meant abandonment by the Great Will.

 And now the guidance of grace will be brought to the Spotted Ones who were rejected by the grace of gold and exiled from the Middle Lands. Ye, dead yet living, your grace long lost, follow the way to the Midlands beyond the misty sea to stand before the Pristine Ring.
And become the Lord Pristine.

From what I've gathered, it looks like we're going to murder the demigod sons hungry for the power of an all-powerful divine queen, steal their ring fragments, reassemble the ring, and take control of the place.

This spot, from what the trailer looks like, looks pretty big. The so-called Middle Lands should be a big open world map, without that saga linearity anymore, where you walked down a corridor to reach a door and then open a shortcut to continue your path. Here we will have an open world, or at least a semi-open one, and the biggest clue for this is the inclusion of the horse, which is called Reima.

Thinking about the issue of combat, apparently, in this game we will have an addition of the stealth element in the game, brought by Sekiro, which should add a new way to approach enemies and defeat them more easily. And, if the game maintains the games' known difficulty level, this approach will probably be recommended at various points in the game, eliminating enemies one by one, instead of playing in the middle of them and being surrounded and killed.

However, this approach probably won't help you during boss fights that are even bigger, full of arms and swords. The scene of the knight throwing the character into the air and impaling him with the sword gives a good idea of what to expect from the Elden Ring bosses. Of course, the scene where the player's sword glows and grows Thundercats style indicates that we will have a good arsenal of weapons and spells at our disposal to die in style in their hands.
