How to choose a CPU in gaming notebooks
The processor is the heart of a PC, and in most gaming notebooks released in 2020, you'll likely find processors of the type Intel Core 10th generation H series (also dubbed the “Comet Lake-H”). You'll still see many of these processors available in 2021 (as well as the occasional older chip), though they're technically no longer the latest and greatest options.
Intel released its first generation 11th generation processor, called the “Tiger Lake-H”, in early 2021 (often dubbed the “H35” class), and some newer and more powerful updates hit the market in May. Early models included “only” four cores and eight threads (the processor's function that allows it to do more tasks at the same time), but thanks to improvements in Intel's manufacturing technology, fewer threads don't always mean less power, especially in tasks that do not require multi-threaded. These processors also have the advantage of using less energy and not getting as hot.
Even better for gamers, the second version of Tiger Lake-H chips is hitting a variety of gaming notebooks in the second half of 2021. They include Core i9 CPUs for enthusiast-grade gear, Core i7 processors for thin and light gaming notebooks, and new Core i5 chip for lower budget machines. Unlike early version processors, these more powerful chips have at least six cores and 12 threads, and the Core i7 and i9 units have eight cores and 16 threads.
In general, more cores and higher clock speeds bring better overall efficiency and greatly improved performance in multi-thread tasks like video projects, but it's not as vital for gaming, making the Tiger Lake H35 quad-core family a good one processor option for your gaming notebooks. Games don't generally require multi-thread tasks like rendering a video or project in software like Blender, but they don't hurt either.
CPU x GPU? Which one to prioritize?
Theoretically, you can still find gaming notebooks with an Intel Core i3 processor, but these are uncommon. Systems with Intel Core i3 or processors AMD entry-level players are certainly capable of running a lot of games, but why stick to the basics? That said, if you have to choose between a high-end CPU or a high-end GPU, choose the GPU.
For example, if you can buy a Core i5 processor instead of a Core i7, and the money saved can go to an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 GPU (instead of an RTX 3060), then do that. Spending money on the GPU makes more sense than spending it on the CPU if gaming is your main use.
Look for Intel Core i5 processors in mid-range systems and Core i7 H, HQ and HK processors in high-end gaming notebooks. H-series processors have more power and tend to appear in more expensive gaming notebooks, while lower-powered U-series chips are designed for thinner, more portable machines.
They are quite different in terms of thermal profile as well as overall performance potential; a Core i7 U-series processor may not have the same number of processing cores as an H-series Core i7 chip. (Intel started using a “G” suffix on its 11th-generation U-series chips to denote the improved integrated graphics, but they are still essentially U-series processors). U-series chips are uncommon in true gaming notebooks, but you can still find them out there. The H series is the best. And the most expensive.
And AMD Processors?
On AMD's side, times are changing. Previously, the portable computer versions of the company's Ryzen 5 and Ryzen 7 processors ranked second to its competitors such as Intel. They have their own performance advantages on desktops and notebooks, but traditionally they are much less common to find on gaming notebooks than Intel products. In 2020, however, AMD launched its new generation of notebook processors based on the Zen 2 architecture, which has been a huge success in desktops.
Compared to Intel equivalents, these chips performed better in media tasks and offered comparable gaming performance at a lower cost. More and more gaming notebooks, especially the more compact ones, are opting for AMD processor solutions, although they are still largely outnumbered by Intel processor gaming notebooks.
Furthermore, they have not simply stopped announcing new things, starting the year with the release of Ryzen 5000 series chips, based on the new Zen 3 architecture. They have been considered incredibly fast, giving a strong signal of an even better performance than the previous ones. , showing that AMD struggles to debunk Intel's dominance in notebooks, gaming notebooks and desktops.
