The Basics of Playing Pokémon Unite

Pokémon Unite is a fast-paced MOBA where teams of five people face off in an arena. Each team must collect Aeos Energy, which is collected by killing wild Pokémon and enemy players. Each team must score points by hitting Aeos Energy in an enemy goal. The team with the highest score and the most Aeos energy collected at the end of the 10-minute match wins the game.

The map is divided into two sections, and each team has two goals they must defend on each side of the map. The map features an upper path, a lower path, and a wilderness area in the center of the map (better known in MOBAs as “Jungle”). Most teams will have one or two players advancing and fighting in each lane, while another player, known as Jungler, kills wild Pokémon in the center to gather Energy Aeos.

Each goal is destroyed after 100 points are scored, meaning teams will have an advantage over enemy territory if they consistently score points. Teams must maintain a balance between attacking and scoring, defending their goals and collecting Aeos energy.

There are also special Pokémon around the map that provide additional bonuses for defeating them. Don't ignore these enemies as they can change the outcome of a match and provide the necessary advantages.

Fighting alone is not recommended as multiple enemies can easily overwhelm a lone player. Teams must work together to score points and defend their territory. Having a balanced composition is also helpful, and learning what role you like to play is important.

Use the in-game tutorials to understand it better

Pokémon Unite has an excellent tutorial system that teaches you the basics of the game. It is highly recommended that you complete the six tutorials in the Practice tab. They provide excellent knowledge and a significant amount of Aeos coins.

Feel free to also use the practice area to learn the mechanics and basics before joining online matches if necessary. Each Pokémon is also available in the Practice Area, so consider trying out new characters here before purchasing them to unlock them.

Find the perfect Pokemon for you

Players can choose from five different classes: Multipurpose/Versatile, Attacker, Defender, Speedster/Runner and Support. Each class supports its team in a special way, but requires slightly different play styles to be effective.

Part of the fun is figuring out which Pokémon suits your playing style. Try out different Pokémon in matches to find out how you like to help your team. Try to use your Pokemon's strengths to avoid harming it.

Versatile Pokemon

Versatile Pokémon are an excellent choice for new players. These Pokémon have a good balance between attack and stamina and are excellent fighters. His mobility is normally average, but it's enough to move around the map effectively.

However, they struggle to support their teammates and occupy spaces that are “empty” in the team. He can be an attacker, defender or support, but they are not as efficient as Pokemons specialized in these roles.

Strikers

Attackers have low stamina but excel at ranged attacks. Players can do massive damage from a safe distance with Attackers, but keep in mind that a quick escape isn't always an option with these Pokémon.

Defenders

Defenders are equivalent to tank characters. They have high endurance and are excellent at protecting their teammates and goals. They are generally unable to deal massive damage, so remember to help these players react.

Pokemon Speedster

Speedsters, or Runners, can move quickly and easily to outrun opponents. Their high mobility makes them the perfect choice for quick attacks and scoring points. Make sure you escape quickly to avoid becoming an easy kill.

Support

Last but not least are the Support Pokémon. These helpful characters heal teammates and defeat opponents, creating easy targets. These Pokémon aren't made for the front lines, so be sure to hide behind an appropriate ally.

Don't ignore the special Pokemon

Players can defeat special Pokémon scattered across the map that provide special buffs when defeated. These buffs can significantly impact you and your team's performance and are almost always worth purchasing. Among the Special Pokémon are:

Bouffant can be found near any spawn point in Remoat Stadium 15 seconds after the start of the round. The player who hits the Bouffant last receives an Orange Buff. This buff slows down enemies equipped with the buff, which is an excellent deterrent to enemies advancing.

Players can also find Ludicolo near Bouffalant, which drops the Purple Buff. This buff increases damage dealt to enemies with low health. Use this buff to easily finish off damaged enemies.

Zapdos is a first generation legend that remains powerful

Drednaw appears at the bottom of the map and provides a defense buff for an entire team when defeated. This shield is an excellent advantage in intense fights and can easily turn the tide of a close confrontation.

Rotom is the special Pokémon that appears at the top of the map. This Pokémon moves to the nearest opponent's goal after being defeated. Rotom charges the enemy goal for a brief period, allowing players to score instantly. Just remember to follow Rotom to the objective to prevent enemies from destroying it.

Zapdos is the last special Pokémon to appear in 10-minute matches. Zapdos appears in the center of the map in the final two minutes of a match. The team that defeats this powerful Pokémon receives a substantial amount of Aeos Energy and can instantly score for 30 seconds. Defeating Zapdos can give a big boost towards the end of the game and help a team bounce back in the final moments.

Try out moves

Almost all Pokémon evolve as the game progresses. This introduces new moves that your Pokémon can learn, slightly changing the way they play. Each Pokémon starts with two basic moves that can be transformed into new moves as they level up. The moves also get stronger towards the end of the game, allowing players to do significant damage.

Some moves synergize with other moves, making them more effective when combined or used in a particular order. Check the Pokemon tab for details about each move to make sure they're in line with your playing style. Also, make sure your moves complement each other and feel free to experiment with your move sets.

Each Pokémon also has a Unite move, which is usually the strongest attack available. Unite moves take some time to activate after each use and can help turn the tide of a fight. These moves cannot be changed, so learn to use your Pokemon's Unite move effectively.

Players can further customize their Pokémon with items. There are currently two types of items in Pokémon Unite: Battle and Standby Items. Battle Items provide buffs to your Pokémon in battle or debuffs to opponents. For example, players can heal their Pokémon with a Potion to keep them alive in a dire situation. Only one battle item can be equipped at a time, so choose carefully.

Retained items provide consistent buffs for your Pokémon in one game. Players can increase the level of items they have with them using the item enhancers found in the store. These items significantly change your Pokémon's strengths, and finding the right combination is essential. Both types of items can be found in the Battle Prep menu. More battle items are unlocked as your trainer level increases.
