Want to Play New World Solo? So Here's 10 Things You Need to Know

What do the missions in New World offer and what modes can I play alone or with friends? Is PvP mandatory? Find out the answers here

A question that always comes up when talking about the Amazon MMO is: “Can you play N ground?" By definition, the answer should be no! After all, being a massive multiplayer game, the idea would be to put the player to play together with others, do missions in cooperative mode and create large teams of players facing a common enemy. However, even MMOs today are changing this thinking and including much more solo content in their games so as not to miss out on those who prefer to play their games without relying so much on other players.

Some games like Elder Scrolls Online e Star Wars: Old Republic, they already do this and offer the possibility for the player to embark on much of their content alone, although the proposal is still a game for the masses, so at some point you will need to join a group of players to advance or even to make the game a little easier. In addition, they also try to lure the player into the game with other players by offering guild-exclusive rewards and other benefits.

In this point, N it's no different and offers some solo content, missions with choices and a bit of decision in the player's hand so they feel like they're making some individual difference to the world, but nothing as big as other singleplayer RPGs on the market like The Witcher, Mass Effect or Dragon Age. It's just more of a “bait” to lure singleplayer lovers and give them the feel of the more conventional RPG game. If you want to know a little bit of what you can and cannot do on your own in N, let's explain here.

Playing alone can be a lot of fun too

What You Can Do When Playing New World Solo

O N took a 180° turn from its initial planning: from a PvP sandbox to an MMO that also offers PvE. We present what you can expect from the missions, whether there are decisions like in single-player RPG games, how co-op works and in which modes you can vent alone or together without getting killed by another player.

How do missions work in New World?

No N, you can accept multiple quests at the same time, which are numbered and displayed on the map. You will receive quests from NPCs with a yellow icon hovering over them or on quest boards. There's the one for your faction, which you can use to unlock special rewards and increase your influence through PvP quests, and the one you use to complete quests for the respective settlement. In return, you will receive payment and increase your territorial reputation.

As in World of Warcraft, NPC missions are preceded by a brief explanation that will make you understand a little of the NPC's motivation and some of the world history that may be involved in the case. Also, the reward (eg a weapon) is displayed in advance – so you can see if the effort is worth it. You can also perform activities outside of missions and collect resources, craft items or weapons, and kill monsters as you roam the open world.

What types of missions are there?

O N mainly offers very simple missions that usually only require one or a few steps, which is normal in MMORPGs. For example, you travel to a location to kill a certain number of enemies, collect supplies from boxes, look for resources, create something, deliver something, or interact with something. O N it's not an MMO focusing on an impressively staged story.

Instead, you must choose for yourself the path you want to take. If you want, you can concentrate entirely on creating, having your own house or even PvP and the fight for supremacy on the island of Aeternum. You can also get a visual impression of the game as well as the missions.

Are there even more complex missions?

Senior Narrative Design Leader Robert Chestney revealed in an interview that the main story may well feature more elaborate missions later on. Of which, half were playable in the beta and now, as an official release, can already be exploited by the player in its entirety.

“The more complex quests are part of the main story and revolve around Corruption, the growing storm and taking players to the Soul Guardians. Some of them require you to visit multiple locations, defeat menacing enemies or even solve puzzles.”

Are there mission options?

In many single-player roleplaying games, decisions are one of the highlights of the missions. According to Chestney, not N you will also influence the end of some missions through decisions. But they didn't want to impose artificial moral issues that would ultimately have no effect, which is why the most important thing is which missions the player decides on – not how he plays them.

If they do, the player must take something of their choice. For example, if one of the requests made by an NPC is to deliver an item to a spear master and then, along the way, he meets that NPC's rival and he tells you to deliver the item to him and not to that one master, you can choose a side and receive a different reward, such as a weapon or skill, depending on your choice. Not very different from other MMOs that tend to have this basic choice in the end.

No N, you level up weapons and skills using them. As a result, you get better and better and can follow a certain path – for example, mainly sword fighting and blacksmithing. So, depending on the type of weapon you want to level, you will choose one or another character to deliver the item.

Can missions be completed in different ways?

Some missions may have optional endings or may even fail, according to Chestney. Combat tactics, he says, almost always depend on the player: you can sneak past enemies, attack them, eliminate them from a distance, or freely draw them in one at a time, Dark Souls style.

Do some missions change the world of New World?

Mainly in the main story and factions, some missions influence the game world. For example, NPCs perform their own activities and change locations when we complete a quest. Others will have a tragic fate or will turn against us. Of course, this is all just a more “aesthetic” question as, in general, after completing the quest, the NPC will just repeat the same line of dialogue with things like “I'll get revenge for what you did”. Some also change their appearance. This will also apply to the entire game world later on.

What can change the world the most is the influence of one or another faction over a territory. This change will influence things like buy and sell items and the hostility with which NPCs may or may not treat your character. Now corruption is eating away at the N and creating powerful enemies. Will it change the open world in the long run? We do not know yet.

Will new quests be added over time?

As befits any game as a service that intends to maintain an active player base over time, the N will also receive new content after launch. Old content will also be revised and expanded:

"After release, we want to further branch out existing missions and add new ones, but always keep the player's freedom and choice as a guide to what we aspire to experience."

Builds for solo play

We have several build suggestions in our New World threads on the site, so we have a good idea of some of the best builds for solo players. Here are some of the standout solo builds in New World.

Big Ax and Ax – Think of a tank build that is a mix of heavy, medium and light armor, aiming for an overall “Normal” weight. You're looking for a roughly 3-to-1 split between Strength and Constitution for your attributes. The Ax will keep you alive, while Crowd Control and Big Ax damage will allow you to face many difficult enemies.

pure build tank – War Hammer and Large Ax or War Hammer and Ax. The more tank the better. Any high-level zone is much easier if you're enveloped in metal. In very high-level areas, like Ruined Mountain, it won't make much of a difference. Enemies still hit hard. But for the hard work between 50-60, a building like this is ideal. Go pure build and heavy armor.

vital stick + any other weapon – This one is a little weird. There's a gap in the community about whether leveling with a Lifestaff is easy or difficult, but if you're playing alone, the stick's sustainability is invaluable. Go for a pure Focus build and then use an amber gem on your weapon. Axe, Big Axe, any other melee weapon with Crowd Control or sustain works well.

How to play New World in co-op mode?

If you want to play with your friends in a group, you first need to combine region and server. Then when the game starts, you need to complete the tutorial individually. After that you will be in one of the four starting zones of the game, if you are not in the same place you will have to find each other before you can start your journey together. It is important that, if you are not together, do not accept missions after the wreck, to avoid “being tied up” to the initial area where you were born. Alternatively, you can complete everything that needs to be done at that starting location first and get organized from the first settlement later.

You can start a group by pressing "H" near a player to open the social menu. There you will find options like “add friend, invite to a group, send messages, exchange, silence, block or report”. Alternatively, you can open the general social menu by pressing the “O” button and search for your friends there to mark them as in-game friends and add them directly to the group. You can also view the options or leave the group there.

If the cooperative team is online, it will be displayed in the upper left corner. In addition, each buddy receives a token, which is also displayed on the compass. To start co-op, you will first need to complete the tutorial.

What changes when I complete co-op missions?

As mentioned above, the game, despite having some solo elements, is still an MMORPG and, as such, will cause you to be taken at some point to play cooperatively with other players. O N, according to Chestney, is intended to attract solo players and groups because they don't want to leave out any type of player:

"Some players prefer to complete missions with friends and others want to play alone. We don't want to limit anyone. If you want to play with friends, missions should be fun together and, of course, faster as a group, so that makes a difference. But there are no big advantages for groups. […] There are some missions and stories that are designed in such a way that you can play them alone or freely with one or two friends."

-- Advertising --

Then, at some point, you will end up being taken to co-op play, as there are missions that can only be played in co-op mode. According to Chestney, some endgame content, such as Expeditions or Elite Points of Interest, is targeted at groups of players.

Not only will you need to play them cooperatively with other players because of the challenge, but also because some puzzles also require coordinated teamwork. It's not just worth it in interesting locations and challenging battles. Experience, gold, and item rewards can also be earned with co-op content.

Do some missions require a certain level?

Yes, as is normal in this type of game, each mission has a recommended level, as does each location you explore in the open world. All enemies in this area bring their level with them. The maximum level is currently 60.

However, you can start missions once you get close to the recommended level. The idea behind this is that you can look for specific challenges to train in the unique combat system of N, which allows the use of abilities, parries or dodges, in addition to attacks. As the focus of the game is on combat skills, the N wants to differentiate itself from other MMOs that rely more on the right combinations of skills and builds to make the player stronger. Here, they want to do something more focused on player skill than high skill numbers.

The fights in N they require correct timing, dodges and correct strikes. A player who is good at the game can challenge another player with max stat but who doesn't know when to dodge or defend. At least that's what they hope to achieve in the game.

Is it possible to avoid PvP?

Yes. You can opt out of PvP, but that will make things difficult for you. PvP ends up being necessary in many moments and makes it easier to obtain some benefits. You, for example, gain more weapon XP when facing player enemies than computer-controlled enemies. The amount you earn when killing another player is based on how long that player has been alive, so the rewards are variable, but sometimes you can earn a huge amount of XP for winning a fight.

Faction Quests are also geared more towards the PvP part than actually PvE, although you may have some content geared towards the game against the computer. According to New World Twitter, you will not enjoy all the game content. Wars for territory and faction influence are also focused on PvP and depending on your Guild (which is equivalent to Guilds) they will ask players to participate in the War. So if you want to enjoy it all, you'll have to go into PvP mode at some point.

What can't you do solo?

Expeditions is five-player content comparable to dungeons in other games. In addition to battles, you will also have to face the aforementioned puzzles. As usual, powerful bosses await you at the end, rewarding you with more valuable loot. To come out victorious, you need to have a group with all kinds of classes and builds, to have the right skills to win.

The MMO really works without these classes, but by leveling and honing your weapons, you can flexibly create them and change them along with your gear. This won't save you from having to go into co-op mode, but you will be able to know what your role in the group is and do it correctly.

Invasions are the PvE equivalent of the massive mass battles of the N, in which you fight in PvP between factions. Altogether, 50 players defend a fortress against waves of corrupted enemies and must face the Void Destroyer in the end to finally stop the flood of enemies. To win, you must keep enemies at bay for 30 minutes; failing to do so will weaken your territory and the bonuses that come with it.
