Have you ever played with Lego? Almost everyone has crossed paths with these 'toys' at least once in their life (either in the original Lego or in one of its many inspirations). In this article you will know the best Lego games ever released.
But why 'toys', in quotes? Well, here's the explanation:
Created in 1934 by a Dane, Lego was born as a simple toy to assemble for children. With the great success of the brand, however, it has grown to become much more than that and today it is a powerful collector's item for fans of various works such as Harry Potter, Star Wars and Lord of the Rings.
Lego is also widely used in education, either for a simple stimulus of concentration and creativity in children or, as in my case, to introduce the complex art of programming.
In 2020, Lego became the most loved brand in the world, based on data from social networks. This fact can say a lot about the success of the brand.
And, of course, over time it expanded and reached the world of games.
In 1995, the first game related to the Lego brand, Lego Fun to Build, appeared. Licensed by The LEGO Group and produced by SEGA, for the SEGA Pico educational console, exclusively in Japan.
In 1997, the first Lego game outside Japan, Lego Island, appeared on the PC, produced by Mindscape.
Since then, the popularity of games of the genre has grown, and to date more than 80 games have been released under the Lego franchise.
Lego games are characterized by being simple to understand and with a touch of humor. Lego games can be found for different platforms such as PC, Wii, Playstation, Xbox, Nintendo DS, Nintendo Switch, Game Boy and even mobile.
Another striking feature of Lego games is the possibility of playing in multiplayer. Connect one more controller to your console and have fun with a friend!
Most of the Lego games were produced by TT Games, which owns the rights to the brand. In 2007, the company was acquired by Warner Bros, starting a series of games related thereafter to the two brands, which grew even more in the market.
Best Lego Games
Leaving out of the loop, what are the best Lego games released so far? Whether they are the darlings of criticism, or the ones that fell most popular, see 10 of the best games in the Lego franchise (with some special mentions), in no particular order.
Lego Jurassic World
Launched in 2015 and based on the Jurassic Park series, its release was set to take place around the same time as the film of the same name.
Lego Jurassic World follows the story of the first four films in the series. The game contains 20 levels, 5 of which are for each film. There are more than 100 playable characters including more than 20 species of dinosaurs. Among humans, each character has a different ability, which must be used for progression in the game.
There is also the possibility to create new characters, including hybrid dinosaurs with parts of different species.
Everything is done, of course, in the most family-friendly way possible, so that children don't have nightmares afterwards. For example, all deaths in the films have been removed, and the characters suffer only minor injuries, or escape unscathed.
The game was very well received, with mostly favorable reviews and sold more than 4 million copies in the first months, being one of the bestsellers of the franchise.

Lego harry potter
There are several Lego games themed in the universe of the most beloved witch: Lego Creator: Harry Potter (2001), Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002), Harry Potter: Years 1-4 (2010), Harry Potter: Years 5- 7 (2011) and Lego Harry Potter Collection (2016).
Of these, Years 1-4 and Years 5-7 are the most popular, also appearing on the best selling list of the entire franchise. As indicated in the titles, the games follow the adventures of the wizard's films and books. Harry Potter Collection is a remastered version of the previous two games, optimized for Xbox and PS4.
Through games it is possible to choose from a huge number of playable characters, choose spells to use, make potions, and several other activities available.
These are games where humor is extremely present, following the theme already known from Lego games. For example, making a wrong potion can turn your character into a frog.
|Launch||2010 (Years 1-4) and 2011 (Years 5-7)|
|Platforms||PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Wii, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Nintendo DS, PlayStation Portable, PlayStation Vita. Years 5-7 only: Nintendo 3DS, Android, IOS|

Lego Star Wars
There are 7 Lego games set in the Star Wars: Lego Star Wars: The Video Game (2005), Lego Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy (2006), Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga (2007), Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars (2011), Lego Star Wars: Microfighters (2014), Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2016) and Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga (2021-yet to be released).
Among them all is worth mentioning The Complete Saga, a combination of the two games published before, with some additions. Being one of the bestsellers in the entire Lego franchise, it covers episodes I through VI of the well-known series.
The objective of the game is to go through all the levels while collecting golden bricks. A curiosity: the special appearance of Indiana Jones, since the actor who played Jones was the same as Han Solo in the franchise.
There are also more than 100 playable characters, including the possibility to create new ones with parts of the existing ones.
Even though it was released more than 10 years ago, the game is still “in the mouth of the people”, since recently a trend started on Tik Tok with memes related to the title.
And as it is very difficult to choose only one among so many great options available, it is also worth mentioning The Force Awakens, or The Awakening of the Force, in Portuguese. Based on the film of the same name, the game brings a new mechanic for building items, bringing back the premise of Lego itself.
Star Wars is certainly the most explored series in the Lego franchise.
|Platforms||PC, PlayStation 3, Wii, Xbox 360, Nintendo DS, Android, IOS|

Lego Marvel Super Heroes
The best-selling title on the list is certainly Marvel Super Heroes. Taking advantage of the theme of heroes on the rise, it was launched in the year 2013. In the story, several heroes from the Marvel universe come together to prevent Doctor Doom and Loki's plans for world domination.
The game alternates puzzle moments with moments of struggle and it is possible to control several different characters, just like in other games in the franchise. In Marvel Super Heroes you can even play as Stan Lee, with his own character voiced by himself.
There are 15 missions in total in story mode, with 11 side missions.
The success was so great that in 2014 the game was released for other platforms, including Android and IOS, under the name Lego Marvel Super Heroes: Universe in Peril. In addition, there is a title spin-off released in 2016, called Lego Marvel Avengers, and a sequel released in 2017, Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2.
|Platforms||PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Wii U, Xbox 360, Xbox One. Marvel Super Heroes: Universe in Peril - Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo DS, PlayStation Vita, Android, IOS|
Batman is also undoubtedly one of the darlings of the Lego franchise players. There are four games already released: Lego Batman: The Videogame (2008), Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes (2012), Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham (2014) and The Lego Batman Movie Game (2017).
For this text, the second game, Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes, stands out. The story follows Batman, Robin and Superman in their attempts to thwart the evil plans of Lex Luthor and the Joker. The Justice League also makes its appearance later in the game.
It was the first game in the Traveller's Tales Lego franchise to feature open world exploration. Despite the name, it's not just Batman-focused, bringing other heroes from the DC universe into play.
It was even made a movie based on the story of that game!
|Platforms||PC, PlayStation 3, Wii, Wii U, Xbox 360, Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo DS, PlayStation Vita, Android, IOS|
Hey, Batman fan!
Be sure to buy the game!
Lego Lord of the Rings
Another series well known and loved by fans. The Lego Lord of the Rings depicts events from the three films (The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King).
Just like in the previous games, a good dose of humor was added to the game, in addition to some scenes having been changed to become more family-friendly.
After zeroing the game, it is possible to redo the events with other characters, creating alternative stories.
Despite some minor changes so as not to lose the Lego essence, the game is a good adaptation of Tolkien's works, without disappointing fans of the saga.
|Platforms||PC, PlayStation 3, Wii, Xbox 360, Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo DS, PlayStation Vita, Android, IOS|

Lego City Undercover
This game is different from the others because it is not based on an existing series. In Lego City Undercover, the story follows police officer Chase McCain in his pursuit of bandits in Lego City.
Chase has several disguises and abilities, making the game very fun.
It is an open world game, allowing the exploration of the city.
The game was a lot compared to GTA, but this time the player controls a policeman whose goal is to comply with the laws, unlike GTA. Despite the comparisons, the criticisms received by the game were mostly positive.

Lego DC Super-Villains
Lego DC Super-Villains is considered the fourth game in the Batman series, but this time focused on the villains of the DC universe.
The story follows the disputes of villains like the Joker and Harlequin against a group of "superheroes" who took the place of the Justice League after kidnapping the heroes.
It was the first game to include customizable characters in its history, being possible to create its protagonist from scratch, and going beyond physical issues, being possible to select characteristics such as skills and equipment.
It is also possible to improve your character throughout the story, which is also a novelty related to the other games in the franchise already released.
It is the first Lego game that brings the story from the perspective of villains, a trend that has become popular in recent years.
Lego DC Super-Villains tries to innovate after so many similar games, but without losing the essence of Lego games, which is simplicity and good humor.
|Platforms||PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One|
A good fan of villains cannot be left out of this!
Lego Pirates of the Caribbean
Based on the series of films of the same name, the Lego Pirates of the Caribbean: The Video Game follows the events of the first four films: The Curse of the Black Pearl, The Chest of Death, At the End of the World and Navigating Mysterious Waters.
The game's launch was planned to take place at the same time as the release of the fourth film, Navigating in Mysterious Waters.
There are 20 missions in total, 5 per movie, and 70 playable characters, each with special abilities (just like in other Lego franchise games). A particularity of the game is the ability to swim (with the exception of Davy Jones, who can walk underwater).
It is considered by critics one of the best adaptations for the Lego franchise.
|Platforms||PC, PlayStation 3, Wii, Xbox 360, Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo DS, PlayStation Portable|
Lego The Incredibles
Another Disney title, and one of the most recent games on the list to close with golden keys.
The game brings the story of the two films of The Incredibles and accurately portrays the events.
It basically brings the same elements from the previous games on the list and the particularity is the insertion of a game mode called “crime waves”, in which the character faces several minions and villains who attack in waves.
To unlock the crime wave, you must complete all quests in the area. There are 10 waves in total, and five super villains to defeat.
|Platforms||PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One|

Bonus: Lego Dimensions
Among so many good options, it's even difficult to choose which one to try first, so here's a bonus: Lego Dimensions. This game works as an all in one, being a crossover of several universes, with an extra touch leaving everything with the face of Lego. It was released in 2015.
Get ready to plug your brain with this story: The adventure begins with Batman and Robin in a chase against a villain. Robin is then sucked into a strange vortex, and Batman jumps after him.
Change of scene, we are now in the dimension of The Lord of the Rings, when Gandalf faces Balrog. Suddenly, who appears? Himself, Batman, he comes and ends up saving Gandalf. The strange vortex appears again and sucks Frodo. The two then jump after him.
Changing again. This time, for Lego Land. Again we have the appearance of the vortex, which this time sucks up Metalbeard (Ironbeard, in Portuguese). Soon after, Batman and Gandalf and the two follow, joining Wildstyle (Megaestilo, in Portuguese) in yet another journey between dimensions.
These are the three main characters in the story. Their goal will be to stop the villain who plans to control all dimensions. With the humor already characteristic of the Lego series and several, several even, trips between different dimensions where more characters known as Dorothy (The Wizard of Oz), Homer Simpson (The Simpsons) and Scooby Doo can be found.
This extremely fun game still has one more thing: it comes with a platform and the characters to be fitted into it as the game progresses. The Starter Pack, which is the starter kit, comes with the platform, the vortex and the dolls of the three main characters (plus Batman's car), but it is possible to buy other characters, such as DLCs.
Unfortunately, the production of Lego Dimensions was discontinued in 2017, with new pieces of the game no longer being made, but it is still possible to find it to sell in some places.
Another negative point is the fact that the only language available is English. You may miss a joke or two, but it's even easy to locate.
|Launch||2015 (discontinued in 2017)|
|Platforms||PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and Wii U|
What did you think of the list? Do you agree with the chosen games? It is very difficult to choose just 10 games in a franchise as long and successful as the Lego games. To play on your computer, you can download almost all titles through Steam.
