What are the best adaptations of game movies?

The best movies for gamers available on streaming services

Virtual game movies do not have the best reputations and many are closer to curiosities than masterpieces. But there is still a lot of fun in these game movies, especially if you don't take them seriously. Here are 10 movie movies available in streaming that are worth watching.

Game Movies
One of the most successful adaptations: Resident Evil

The Angry Birds Movie 2

The first animated film based on the Rovio mobile game was exactly what people expected from a fad. But The Angry Birds Movie 2 gets stranger with its approach to the world of birds and pigs at war on neighboring islands. The producers handed the sequel to the creator of Flapjack's Mischief, Van Orman. He makes some welcome adjustments to the story, adding strange new side characters and absurd plot elements, while keeping the tone focused on the children.

The movie Angry Birds 2 is being streamed on Netflix and is available for digital purchase and rental on Amazon, iTunes, Google Play, Voodoo and other digital stores.

Mortal Kombat

For many fans, Mortal Kombat 1995 was one of the first legitimate virtual game films, an action-packed spectacle, with an unforgettable soundtrack and a genuine affinity for the game that inspired it. The film captures the simplicity of Midway's arcade fighting game, with familiar characters and catchphrases. It presents skillfully choreographed martial arts, within a plot loosely inspired by fantasy (which is just an excuse for more fight scenes).

Mortal Kombat is being streamed and available on Netflix and for digital purchase and rental on Amazon, iTunes, Google Play, Voodoo and other digital stores.

Pokémon Detective Pikachu

It seemed a little strange that Pokémon's first live-action action movie was based on the spin-off game, Detective Pikachu, but it turned out to be the perfect choice for a fun sci-fi movie with broad mainstream appeal.

The cute little monster Pikachu becomes a cynical detective voiced by Ryan Reynolds, solving a mystery in a futuristic city inhabited by humans and Pokémon. Pikachu joins the son of a missing police detective (Justice Smith) to track down the young man's father.

Postal

German filmmaker Uwe Boll has made a career directing almost universally criticized game adaptations, including Alone in the Dark and House of the Dead. Postal is Boll's middle finger for his critics, an aggressively offensive comedy based on the video game series.

Postcard is vulgar, violent and deliberately unpleasant, featuring cameos from Boll and game designer Vince Desiderio as themselves, essentially provoking the audience. It is exceptionally horrible and terribly unique at the same time.

Postcard is being transmitted on Amazon Prime Video.

Rampage

Do you like to see giant monster fighting? Because that's what you get in Rampage, a loose adaptation of the popular 1980s arcade game. Dwayne Johnson earns the most revenue, but the real stars in this film are the mutant animals (gorilla, crocodile and wolf) that wreak havoc on several sights.

There is more to the plot in this film than in the simplistic game, but the filmmakers still introduce only the narrative needed to make the monsters attack (and to give Johnson some cool phrases).

The Rampage is being broadcast by HBO Max and is available for digital purchase and rental on Amazon, iTunes, Google Play, Vudu and other digital stores.

resident evil

Director Paul WS Anderson has attracted cult followers for his brand of simple action films, and he is the lead author behind the successful Resident Evil franchise. The first film features Milla Jovovich as Alice, a secret agent who fights the zombie apocalypse unleashed by the sinister Umbrella Corporation.

Resident Evil is available on Netflix and for purchase and rent on Amazon, iTunes, Google Play, Vudu and other digital outlets.

Silent Hill

One of the most critically acclaimed video game films, the Silent Hill adaptation turns the scary horror game into a chilling movie. Radha Mitchell stars as a mother in search of her missing daughter in the haunted town of Silent Hill. The more she explores the city, the deeper she falls into a nightmare world, with characters and images taken from the game. It is a surreal and disturbing film that follows the unpredictable logic of a dream.

Silent Hill is available for digital purchase and rental on Amazon, iTunes, Google Play, Voodoo and other digital outlets.

Sonic The Hedgehog

After years of trying to bring Sega’s main character to the big screen, Sonic The Hedgehog became a blockbuster hit in 2020, with its mix of action, science fiction and goofy comedy. Ben Schwartz voices the hyperactive blue character, with Jim Carrey as Sonic's longtime enemy, Dr. Robotnik. It's a family movie that doesn't break new ground, but still finds a way to effectively put Sonic in the frame of a blockbuster that appeals to the public.

Sonic the Hedgehog is available on Amazon Prime Video, Hulu and Epix, and is available for digital purchase and rental on Amazon, iTunes, Google Play, Vudu and other digital stores.

tomb raider

After the Tomb Raider game films, led by Angelina Jolie, failed with two works, adventurer Lara Croft was restarted with this bolder take starring Alicia Vikander. Vikander's Lara is still a treasure hunter traveling the world, but she is more of a fighter than a glamorous socialite.

Warcraft

The highest grossing game movie of all time, Warcraft was a huge hit with the international audience. It was a passionate project by science fiction author Duncan Jones (Moon, Against Time), who co-wrote and directed the adaptation of Blizzard Entertainment's MMORPG.

Recently, the new film by Mortal Kombat it was released in North American cinemas and on the streaming platform HBO Max.
