Starting Black Desert Online is not like starting to play an ordinary MMORPG. There is a lot you need to know and let's talk here
Black Desert Online is not like an ordinary MMORPG. It's not that thing where you collect a million quests, go out killing monsters and collect some nonsense to deliver to an NPC. That “go out there and kill 50 slimes” stuff is in the past with the Pearl Abyss game. Here are a lot of different mechanics and things you can do to earn some money even when you're not playing the game itself.
The game has been around for almost seven years, but it remains today as one of the most complex MMORPGs out there. It's a sandbox game with systems on top of systems that players need to understand to stand out. Some of the activities involved in the MMORPG may even require real spreadsheets. So, before starting Black Desert, check out some of the things you can do, and some of the things you should do, to make the game more than just a traditional MMO.

Start Black Desert not just start another MMO
Despite its appearance, Black Desert Online is no ordinary MMORPG. There are a lot of fantastic ideas beyond the game itself, but figuring out how it all works can be really confusing – there's a lot to do, there's a lot going on onscreen. Fear not, with these seven tips you'll begin to understand the complicated web of crafting, trading and adventure in the world of Black Desert Online.
There is no level limit on the equipment
That's right. A lowly level 5 character can use the best equipment he can get in the game. There is no level limit for any equipment. You can also upgrade your equipment with Black Stones almost from the start. There's no need to wait until the game shows you how to do it.
To improve your equipment, you can get better equipment by buying it directly from the market and/or upgrading your weapons and armor with Black Stones through the Black Spirit.
- The best armor and weapons differ for any class, but overall Azwell weapons and Grunil armor are considered good.
- You can increase your chosen and secondary weapon to +7 and your armor to +5 with no miss chance and you should do this as soon as possible.
- After that, you should probably collect money to buy bigger upgrades, as it's almost always cheaper.
Not all quests are worth it
In most MMOs, doing quests is the only way to level up your character. We learned that when you arrive in a new city, the first thing to do is run around devouring all the missions before heading out to complete them. Doing this in Black Desert Online will only drive you to despair due to the sheer volume of quests, most of them not rewarding you with any experience.
Instead, focus on those given to you by the Black Spirit you encounter at the start of your journey and those offered in the city of Velia, which will guide you through various mechanics, such as trading or crafting. You should also complete quests marked with an exclamation mark, as they will be essential to the story and worth completing.
While most quests won't level you up, they will reward you with “contributing experience”. Be selective with missions and prioritize those that offer special items, inventory expansion slots, or teach something new. If you want to level up your character, the best way to do that is to go out and kill monsters, which is lucky because combat in Black Desert is so much fun.
Try to earn lots of contribution points
Make good use of your contribution points and have the hired NPC workers do all the heavy lifting for you. In Black Desert, Contribution Points are a redeemable currency that you can use to invest in trade routes and production chains to earn a lot of money easily.
You get these points in most quests, and although you only have a few to work with at first, more will quickly appear. The system itself may look a little strange, but taking the time to learn how to use it will be worth it.
As you explore, each area of the world is represented by a node that you can unlock using contribution points and chain together with other nodes that lead back to a city. Each city will have a work supervisor from whom you can buy workers, sending them to nodes to collect a specific resource.
You can even use contribution points to buy property, convert houses into workshops, and hire more workers to create and refine resources. It's all very complicated, but it's an excellent source of passive income. If none of that interests you, spend your points on home buying and turn them into storage space to increase your city's bank space.
Explore and learn everything
One of the worst things you could do is play Black Desert Online like it's any other MMORPG – it's not. While the temptation to run to level 50 can be strong, I would really suggest that you take the time to talk to the NPCs and immerse yourself in the world. Black Desert Online is incredibly dense, and if you try to swallow it all at once, you won't make it. Furthermore, by taking it slow and exploring the world, you will increase your character's knowledge. In Black Desert Online, knowledge is power.
Monsters you kill, items you encounter, and characters you talk to all contribute to your character's repository of knowledge, which does much more than provide you with little snippets of lore about the world. When you gain enough knowledge about a topic, such as finding all the merchants in a certain city, you will receive more energy points which, in turn, will allow you to create or collect more.
Energy is replenished fairly quickly, but having an ample supply of it will be needed as you advance on your journey. By taking the time to scour the environments and chat with the characters, you'll be well armed with a ton of energy and a greater appreciation for the Black Desert's lore and history. Plus, it gives you something to read on long trips between cities.
there is always something to do
Black Desert requires more than just logging in, doing a dungeon or two, and then logging out again. You also have plenty of options when you're not playing. Instead of disconnecting, consider leaving your character at a fishing spot with your rod and line. They will start fishing automatically, albeit at a slower pace, but it's a great way to level up your fishing skills and earn some money while you're away from your computer.
Even if you don't have the energy to fish, you can always load your donkey with commercial goods and put your character on automatic mode by going to distant cities to earn some easy money. Just remember to check it out occasionally or plan your routes carefully to avoid the bad guys who like to roam the roads. Lastly, the workers you hire to collect for you are only active while you're logged in, so keeping Black Desert running even when you're not playing can earn you valuable resources.
Horses are more than mounts
Getting your first horse can be exciting, just because they can get you places much faster than on foot. But horses are more than faster modes of travel; they can be equipped with armor and used in battle, learn skills, produce offspring, and these can be sold to other players for a good sum. In all honesty, you could easily spend all your time in the Black Desert becoming a horse breeder. So take the time to learn and equip your horse properly.
Horses are a big responsibility because they don't magically appear or disappear at will. If you get off the horse and leave him somewhere alone while exploring, there's a good chance he'll die if a monster bumps into him. Taking the time to find a safe place to leave him and always keeping the carrots handy to keep him in high health will save you from expensive bills to heal your horse in the stable. By training your horse and teaching him new skills, he can become an invaluable companion.
Having an alternate character is fun
Leveling up an 'alt' in most MMOs can be a lot of work as you go through the same story missions just to try out a slightly different style of play. Black Desert, however, is very non-linear and makes leveling up alternate characters much less tedious.
After watching the intro cutscene, you're free to go anywhere in the world. Better yet, all characters you create in a “family” share contribution points and can access each other's homes and storage. One thing they don't share, however, is energy.
While you might be tempted to make a jack-of-all-trades character who can do it all, you'll never have the energy points to invest in all these different creation or gathering activities. Instead, create an alt that's dedicated to creation while you save your main character's energy for more pressing matters. This will also allow you to experience how well each class does in combat, as each class is very different. Switching between characters is also easy, you don't even have to disconnect.
join a guild
Okay, this one should be a little obvious, but you'd be surprised how most MMORPGs are focused on a single player these days. Black Desert Online doesn't actively punish those who are playing alone, but doing so means missing out on a large aspect of the game.
Although not yet released, the sieges will allow players and their guilds to compete for control of territories several times a week. With no traditional raids or endgame dungeons, sieges will be how most of the community will spend their time after reaching the level cap. Losing it because you didn't join a guild would be a big loss.
The guilds themselves are also more complex than they first appear. Instead of simply joining, you sign a contract that pays a daily salary from the guild coffers. You can also participate in special guild quests to increase your daily salary, as well as special guild abilities that will provide passive buffs like increasing your gathering speed. Playing with friends also gives a big bonus to the experience you get from killing monsters, so you'll never want to hunt alone. Besides, it's nice to have people to talk to, you know?
