Minecraft is a very magical sandbox game that, to this day, has not lost its popularity. Some may attribute its longevity and replay factor to its open-world environment and simple design. And while these two factors definitely play an important role, it must be said that the existence of mods in Minecraft contributes heavily to its eternal success.

Minecraft mods are basically community-created content that adds new items, updates, variations, expansions, and other modifications (hence the name) to the game. They can be a lot of fun to play with, and for long-time players, they can breathe new life into a game that is already getting repetitive.

If you've always wanted to try out Minecraft mods but didn't know where to start, don't worry. Our comprehensive guide on installing mods in Minecraft in 2021, after game updates, will make the process easy to understand and relatively easy to follow.

Installing Mods in Minecraft: A Pre-Installation Checklist

Before you start looking for mods to download and install (not least because you don't need to, we have a nice list of cool mods right here), we recommend following this list of security checks. This will ensure that your game is as optimized as possible to install and play with mods.

Make sure your game is in the latest version. Downloading and installing mods in Minecraft will require a fair amount of digital work, such as moving files, changing filenames (and sometimes extensions), and downloading extra programs. You can make sure your Minecraft version is the latest or, if you need it, you may have to buy a more up-to-date version of the game. We do not guarantee the operation of mods, as it is something that depends on the content creator's work.

Be sure what you are doing on your PC. If you are sharing your PC with someone else, ask for permission first before modifying or changing files. If you are unsure or uncomfortable with this, you will have difficulty installing most Minecraft mods. See what you're going to do and make sure you get it done before continuing. You have been warned.

What is your version of Minecraft? Unfortunately, full mods don't work with Minecraft Bedrock. In order for you to download, install mods in the Minecraft you want and enjoy the game, you will need to have Minecraft: Java Edition on your PC. It is available on Mojang website, and you will need a Mojang account to purchase it.

Check your storage space. Just like any download, mods will take up storage space. They can range from a few hundred to a few thousand MB. The recommended storage requirement for Minecraft Java Edition is at least 4GB and preferably an SSD rather than a classic HD.

If your computer doesn't have more than 4GB of storage to spare, you may need to do a little general cleaning (or get a larger storage hard drive). Can your computer handle it? A quick Google search should show you all the recommended device specs for Minecraft, but here are some of the basics:

  • GPU: Any graphics card that supports OpenGL 1.3 API and VBOs
  • OS: Windows 7 or higher, OS X 10.9 Maverick or any Linux distribution from 2014 onwards
  • RAM: 4 GB, at least DDR3 1600 MHz

If your PC's specs are lower than the recommended minimum specs, you will unfortunately not be able to install mods in Minecraft. So make sure you can handle it all.

Pre-installation precautions

As with anything online, it's best to be careful when looking for Minecraft mods to download. There will be many seemingly innocent download links and websites that hide viruses and Trojans.

Typically, search engines will return the safest results they can (especially if you have certain filters and parameters to protect you). However, it is not impossible for obscure pages to pass the security sieve of search engines. Always be smart when doing searches not to fall on websites with viruses.

Stay on sites that are well known, have a lot of traffic, and are highly recommended by Minecraft or the gaming community as sources of reliable and safe mods. For example:

www.minecraftforum.net
www.minecraftmods.com
www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods
www.pcgamesn.com

Note that many mods will have shortened links via AdFly as a way to monetize their creations. AdFly is a reasonably safe third-party URL shortener, but still.

Always be smart to click on any link.

There are still ways for viruses to infiltrate during the 5-10 second period between AdFly showing your ads and AdFly finally releasing you to the download page.

Here are some rules to remember when clicking on AdFly links:

  • Never click “obvious-looking” download buttons while still on the ad page;
  • Never click “Allow” when a dialog box appears while you are on the ad page; always choose “Block”;
  • Always click the big yellow Ignore Ad button as soon as it allows; never click on anything else;
  • Never click on any links on the ad page, even if you really want to see what they are offering or where they say they will take you. If you're really curious about this, do some research later;

Always use your common sense when making your downloads. When in doubt, call an adult or search for verified reviews.

Download Forge

We recommend downloading the latest version. Forge has been around for almost as long as Minecraft (it was introduced during Minecraft 1.13.2), so there will be many versions to choose from. Unless you are interested in playing with older mods that are no longer supported or have been discontinued, you will get better results downloading the latest version.

Important: remember to click on the button that corresponds to your operating system; “Windows Installer” for Windows users, “Installer” for Mac and Linux users.

Run the Forge program

Once you have the Forge Program securely downloaded in your Downloads folder, you will have to run it. Simply double click on the .jar file (or right click on it and select “Run as Administrator” if that option appears to you) and let it run.

What if my antivirus program warns me about Forge?

It is not uncommon for antivirus programs such as Windows Defender to identify Forge as “malicious” software. This is not true (as long as you downloaded it from the recommended link). Forge has been downloaded – and continues to be – by millions of people around the world every day.

Just close the warning, add the .jar file to your exceptions list, or basically do whatever it takes to make sure the system doesn't take any action against Forge. We recommend doing a clean installation of Forge if the antivirus blocks it in the beginning, as some file might have been corrupted if the antivirus stopped the installation in the middle of the way. Trust us, Forge is 100% secure.

Installing Forge in Minecraft

After selecting the .jar file and opening it, you can install Forge in Minecraft with just two clicks.

At the top of the Forge window you will see three options: Install Client, Install Server, Extract. Be sure to select “Install Client. Scroll down and click the OK button.

Remember that your version of Forge must match your version of Minecraft. If you are running Minecraft version 1.13, you must download and install Forge version 1.13. If you update Minecraft regularly, your version of Minecraft will likely match the latest version of Forge.

Verify successful installation

Once you've verified that Forge has been installed, open Minecraft Launcher. Mouse over the arrow next to the big green Play button and click to expand the menu. You should see "Forge" in the list of installed programs and updates. Select it and hit the Play button. This will start Minecraft with Forge installed, ready for you to install some mods.

Once you find a mod you want, download it to your default Downloads folder or download it to your mods folder right away. If you choose the first option, you can always manually move the download to your Minecraft mods folder.

Locate the Minecraft mods folder.

Your mods folder can usually be found inside your .minecraft folder, which is usually on your C: drive. Then go to Local Disk C:\Users\yourname\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft, where “yourname” is the name you entered as the main PC user.

Alternatively, just type C:\Users\yourname\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft in the File Explorer address bar. It should show the correct location. You will likely see some folders beside the mods folder (ie logs folder, saves folder, assets folder, etc.). If you don't know what these other folders are about, it's best not to touch them.

In case you don't see a mods folder inside the .minecraft folder, you can always create one. Just right click anywhere inside the .minecraft folder, select new, create folder and rename New Folder to Mods.

Make sure your downloaded mods are in the “mods” folder.

To install mods in Minecraft, make sure they are inside the Minecraft Mods folder. You can move the mods manually (via the classic Crtl+C Crtl+V method) to your mods folder (inside the .minecraft folder) or you can download the mods directly to your mods folder.

Start Minecraft with Forge installed.

If you've done everything according to this guide and no unforeseen complications have occurred, your mods should immediately appear in your game or take effect immediately when you start. If everything works out, just play! If not, we recommend doing a clean installation of Forge, uninstalling the software and using a program like Ccleaner to clean the residual files from the PC and after that, restarting the process of installing mods in Minecraft.

Final considerations

Before we finish this article on installing mods in Minecraft, here are just a few more things to consider regarding downloading, installing and running your Minecraft mod. Mods can sometimes have compatibility issues with other mods. This simply means that some mods – especially those from different creators – might not get along with others.

To find out which ones are conflicting, we recommend disabling mods one at a time until you find the problematic ones. From there, you'll have to decide which one you want to keep and which one you can go without. Disabling mods is much easier than uninstalling them completely. All you need to do is add the “.disabled” extension to the end of the mod filename. This will prevent them from appearing in the game.

Most mods don't work in multiplayer, so make sure you don't download any mods with the intention of sharing the experience with your friends. They just don't work that way. Also, be warned that some of them might end up being considered cheating by the game, depending on what they do. So, be aware of this before going into multiplayer with mods installed.

Now that you know how to install Minecraft mods, a whole new world of possibilities has opened up for you. Community created content really excites the game due to the simple fact that players know what other players want.

It's much easier for consumers to create the content they want, because they have access to the preferences, desires and opinions of other consumers, without having to consider whether the product will make a profit or not and other things studios tend to consider before releasing something (many times players want things, but that doesn't mean they'll pay for them).

This means that the mods they create will likely be something you always wanted in the world of Minecraft or something you didn't know you wanted in the world of Minecraft until you had it there. Either way, your Minecraft experience will never be the same.

Bonus: Nvidia RTX

If you want to make your game look nice, in addition to installing mods in Minecraft, we can also count on a little help from Nvidia's RTX technology. The game becomes completely different from the original, allowing creations with materials, like glass, that would look different if they were made in the base game. RTX is only available in the Windows 10 version of the game and you can find it on Microsoft store.
