Know Who are Suicide Squad Characters

The new Task Force X is hitting theaters after a bumpy start. If you want to stay on top of the movie, then meet the Suicide Squad Characters

David Ayner's Suicide Squad, released in 2016, was a film… “laden with bad decisions”, to say the least. A roster of stars like Will Smith, Margot Robbie, and Viola Davis wasn't enough to make DC Comics' supervillain team match the success of Marvel's underdog team, Guardians of the Galaxy. So Warner decided to bring in Marvel director James Gunn and give him the task of turning the Suicide Squad into a success. And so far, it looks like he did it.

Bringing the screens an all-new (mostly) list of unstable, weird, and colorful Task Force X supervillains and anti-heroes will debut in James Gunn's Suicide Squad. First revealed in the 2020 DC FanDome, the new lineup of intriguing characters promises to join forces to fight the monstrous alien starfish Starro the Conqueror.

While it's certain that not the entire team won't make the end credits unscathed or whole (they are Suicide after all), each team member offers a distinct set of skills, sometimes ridiculous, and a unique personality that they may (or may not) put on. endangered or enhance their mission.

Suicide Squad Characters

The Suicide Squad story is about one of a team of imprisoned supervillains, called the Suicide Squad or Task Force X, who carry out high-risk missions in exchange for reduced prison sentences and a few extra luxuries in their cells. Their infamous name refers to their government's belief that their status as villains and convicts makes them expendable and readily available for missions that others would consider suicide.

While it features some of the same actors and characters from Ayer's film, like Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn and Jai Courtney's George Harkness, aka Captain Boomerang, James Gunn's Suicide Squad is basically a smooth reboot – that's why it isn't called Suicide Squad 2.

Overseeing the imprisoned comic book villains is Amanda Waller (Viola Davis), the government official who heads Task Force X. Joel Kinnaman is back as Colonel Rick Flag, with the unenviable job of keeping the Suicide Squad in line and focused while they are in the field. James Gunn, true to his comic and absurd style, opted for a series of bizarre, sometimes ridiculous, and relatively unknown characters to the rest of his new Suicide Squad team. So exactly who is aboard the new Task Force X?

Harlequin (Margot Robbie)

Playing the role of Harlequin for the third time, Margot Robbie stars as former Arkham Asylum psychiatrist Dr. Harleen Quinzel. The Suicide Squad's first movie featured her first interactions with the Joker (Jared Leto) while he was her patient. After he dumped her in a chemical tank at the Ace Chemicals plant, she maintained an intermittent relationship with the Clown Prince of Crime until she finally dumped him.

After her “Fantabulous Emancipation” in Birds of Prey, Harlequina is now even more determined and dangerous than ever. Although she doesn't have superpowers, despite recent trailers showing some sort of “flower power”, Harlequin's combat skills and her unpredictable mind remain one of the Squad's most powerful assets.

Bloodthirsty (Idris Elba)

Although Elba was originally destined to replace Will Smith as Gunslinger, due to the actor's scheduling conflicts, director Gunn preferred him to play Robert DuBois, aka Bloodthirsty. In Suicide Squad, he is serving time in prison for "putting Superman in the ICU with a Kryptonite bullet." The character has had a few incarnations since he was created in 1987, but his origin story is about someone who went crazy after discovering that his brother Micky took his place in recruiting for the Vietnam War.

Lex Luthor then manipulated DuBois into blaming Superman, before providing him with a teleporter and weapons. In the 2021 movie, Bloodthirsty's motivation is to help his daughter Tyla, played by Storm Reid, whose court case is used by Amanda Waller as a way to convince him to join the team. The trailer also shows that DuBois has some sort of close connection to Rat Slayer 2.

You can play the Bloodthirsty in Fortnite. See everything here!

Peacemaker (John Cena)

Know Who Are Suicide Squad Characters | af2c69d9 peace | married games movies / series | batman, cinema, dc comics, suicide squad, movies, flash | suicide squad characters

John Cena stars as Christopher Smith, aka Peacemaker, a character Cena himself described as "Idiot Captain America." The Peacemaker is a peace diplomat so committed to achieving peace that he is willing to become a vigilante to achieve his goals, going after warlords and dictators.

In the comics, he discovers that his efforts are the result of a mental illness, caused by the shame and guilt of knowing his father was a Nazi death camp commander. After Suicide Squad, John Cena's Peacemaker will star in his own series, under the direction of James Gunn, which promises a lot of unnecessary violence, a lot of James Gunn's signature humor and narrative connections to a DCEU.

Colonel Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman)

Know Who Are Suicide Squad Characters | dde1530b flag | married games movies / series | batman, cinema, dc comics, suicide squad, movies, flash | suicide squad characters

Joel Kinnaman returns as Colonel Rick Flag, leader of the original Suicide Squad. In the first Suicide Squad movie, he is a Special Forces officer and graduate of West Point, hired by Amanda Waller to monitor June Moone / Sorceress (Cara Delevingne). During the events of the 2016 movie, Flag fell in love with Moone and eventually freed her from the clutches of the ancient goddess Sorceress who was trying to unleash a potentially cataclysmic threat to humanity.

Flag has also enlisted the character Katana (Karen Fukuhara) as her personal bodyguard, but while Katana's character has been badly put to use in Suicide Squad 1, the Colonel won't take her on the new Task Force X mission.

Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney)

Another member of the original Suicide Squad, Jai Courtney stars as George “Digger” Harkness, a notorious Australian criminal who goes by the name of Captain Boomerang. The Suicide Squad movie showed that he was captured by Barry Allen (Ezra Miller), aka Flash, after a series of jewelry thefts. After being sentenced to three life sentences, Harkness was forced to join Task Force X.

With the Suicide Squad taking a new direction, Harkness's connection to the previous Task Force X formation and the Scarlet Sprinter will be reconstituted, but his personality and weapons of choice will remain the same (and for God's sake, don't bring it up back that stuffed unicorn). However, with Andy Muschietti's Flash retaining parts of the DCEU canon, it could be that this Captain Boomerang will still cross paths with Barry Allen in the future.

The Thinker (Peter Capaldi)

Peter Capaldi (from the Dr. Who series) has been confirmed to star in the film as The Thinker, one of DC Comics' oldest villains, whose name has been used by four different versions over the years. His abilities include powers derived from telekinesis technology and mind control through his “Thinking Hood” – a metal helmet that projects his mental strength.

The Thinker may actually be a very young man, but his brain drains energy from the rest of his body and causes him to age prematurely. The character also recently appeared as the main antagonist of the Season 4 of the Flash series on The CW, played by Neil Sandilands. Here, the Thinker must play a key role in combating the mind control of Starro the Conqueror, who has been confirmed as the film's antagonist.

Sol Soria (Alice Braga)

Know Who Are Suicide Squad Characters | 3256a8da sun | married games movies / series | batman, cinema, dc comics, suicide squad, movies, flash | suicide squad characters

Brazilian Alice Braga plays Sol Soria, which will likely be a gender-shifted version of the Juan Soria character, who has the ability to open any lock or any object he touches, after injecting nanites into his hand. Despite having a childhood dream of joining the Justice League, Juan was rejected and his hopes dashed.

Tormented and penniless, he robbed a bank but was arrested by the League. Due to his ability to pick any lock, he was put in a hole in Belle Reve before being recruited into the Suicide Squad. Soria's skill set is a leftover from the Slipknot character of the Suicide Squad – a criminal who could scale anything with his deft knots. Slipknot died shamefully at the start of the 2016 film, so Soria's fate doesn't look so promising.

Blackguard (Pete Davidson)

Know Who Are Suicide Squad Characters | 743e12d6 black | married games movies / series | batman, cinema, dc comics, suicide squad, movies, flash | suicide squad characters

SNL cast member and comedian Pete Davidson appears as Richard Hertz, aka Blackguard. Initially an ordinary thug, he was recruited by the criminal organization known as The 1000 to carry out a series of jobs and operations for their nefarious purposes.

He usually wears the heavy armor offered to him by The 1000, which allows him to spawn a shield and mace made of pure energy. In the Suicide Squad, however, Davidson's volatile Blackguard primarily uses it to generate firearms.

Polka Dot Man (David Dastmalchian)

Know Who Are Suicide Squad Characters | 07458c68 polka | married games movies / series | batman, cinema, dc comics, suicide squad, movies, flash | suicide squad characters

Abner Krill, also known as Polka Dot or Polka Dot Man, is a minor 1960s Batman villain who launched a crime wave inspired by dots and blemishes. He wore a polka-dot-covered costume that could be removed from the suit and turned into a variety of objects, from deadly weapons to a flying saucer, which he used as an escape vehicle.

-- Advertising --

Those powers have been faithfully translated to screen in Suicide Squad, and Polka Dot Man recognizes how absurd his identity is, but he's still excited at the prospect of perhaps not surviving the mission. The trailers showed off his powers in action, and his desire to become an anti-hero seems to be one of the film's most emotional moments, rare as they are.

Wise (Michael Rooker)

Know Who Are Suicide Squad Characters | d85c149e wise | married games movies / series | batman, cinema, dc comics, suicide squad, movies, flash | suicide squad characters

Sporting a stunning wig, James Gunn's longtime friend and stars in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 and 2, Michael Rooker (the Youndu) has been announced to appear as Brian Durlin, better known as the Sage. Heir to a huge financial fortune, a vigilante genius and head of a profitable blackmail business, the Sage seems to have memory lapses because of his non-linear memory, which is due to a chemical imbalance.

The Sage usually appears in the Birds of Prey comics and often wields a pair of truncheons. He has appeared in trailers a few times, but we still don't know what size his role is.

Mongal (Mayling Ng)

Know Who Are Suicide Squad Characters | 8f3b484f mongal | married games movies / series | batman, cinema, dc comics, suicide squad, movies, flash | suicide squad characters

In the comics, Mongal is an alien war lady who, alongside her twin brother Mongul the Younger, is the daughter of the tyrannical ruler of the Warworld, Mongul the Elder. She and her brother tried to kill Superman for dishonoring his father in a confrontation that turned into a bloody battle and ended only when the Kryptonian nearly killed Mongul.

As an alien, Mongal possesses superhuman strength, agility, speed and endurance, allowing her to face Superman in combat. In the comics, she ends up being killed by her brother, who believed that family was a weakness he couldn't have. She is already familiar to DC fans as Mayling Ng previously played the Amazon warrior named Orana in Wonder Woman.

The Detachable Kid – TDK (Nathan Fillion)

Know Who Are Suicide Squad Characters | 20aedc51 tdk | married games movies / series | batman, cinema, dc comics, suicide squad, movies, flash | suicide squad characters

TDK has been confirmed as an abbreviation for The Detachable Kid, which in turn is another name for the character Arm-Fall-Off-Boy. He has the ability to detach his own limbs and use them as weapons, though it's not clear how he originally acquired this strange power. His ability proved expressionless and he was rejected by the Legion.

A clip from the recently released movie showed that this ability is likely to be just as useless on the big screen, although it no doubt seems like a funny moment before chaos starts again. The character will be played by Nathan Fillion, known for his lead roles in cult television shows Firefly and Castle. Like Michael Rooker, Fillion is a longtime friend and collaborator of director James Gunn, who also played an alien in Guardians of the Galaxy.

Rat Cat 2 (Daniela Melchior)

Know Who Are Suicide Squad Characters | 77f5b2b3 mouse | married games movies / series | batman, cinema, dc comics, suicide squad, movies, flash | suicide squad characters

Portuguese actress Daniela Melchior plays Rat Slayer 2, probably related to the original Batman Rat Slayer, whose ability was to control and communicate with rats. Originally called Otis Flannegan, he developed his criminal alter ego as a Rat Slayer and trained hordes of rats to kill and torture before being stopped by Batman.

It's possible that Rat Slayer 2 is Flannegan's daughter, his protégé, gender-shifted version, or maybe even a copycat of him. The trailers showcased the skills and gave fans a glimpse into her most vulnerable side during conversations when a core team member, Bloodthirsty, promises to keep her alive. What these conversations might mean in context is unknown, but perhaps a moment of dark reflection and closeness that the film could build along the plot.

King Shark (voice of Sylvester Stallone)

Know Who Are Suicide Squad Characters | d5b03db8 tuba | married games movies / series | batman, cinema, dc comics, suicide squad, movies, flash | suicide squad characters

He is a shark-human hybrid. It was initially believed that King Shark would be voiced by comedian Steve Agee, but the first trailer revealed that Sylvester Stallone is indeed giving voice to the spooky, gigantic hybrid. Also known as Nanaue, King Shark's father is the God Shark. Due to his physiology, he is able to live indefinitely underwater with superhuman strength and durability, as well as a phenomenal appetite for humans, as evidenced in the trailers.

-- Advertising --

Despite his intimidating looks and abilities, he is innocent, another element of his character that fans have already seen thanks to the trailers. He is often portrayed as a hammerhead shark in the comics, but King Shark's new Suicide Squad design gives him a great look. Interestingly, Suicide Squad director David Ayer previously explained that King Shark was supposed to appear in the 2016 movie, but as this would only have been possible as a fully CGI character, he was replaced by Crocodile.

Weasel (Sean Gunn)

Know Who Are Suicide Squad Characters | e5f38772 doni | married games movies / series | batman, cinema, dc comics, suicide squad, movies, flash | suicide squad characters

James Gunn's brother Sean Gunn should appear as the character Weasel, a man-sized anthropomorphic weasel. In the character's first incarnation as John Monroe, the Weasel was a man who did not perform well academically, and then assumed the costumed identity of a weasel to brutally murder those he believed were threatening to take over.

In the Suicide Squad, he is a veritable mutant weasel possessing superhuman strength and speed. At first, the team doesn't quite know what creature he is and even confuses him with a werewolf, but they soon have more respect for him when they learn that he killed 27 children. Sean Gunn has played motion capture for the Rocket Raccoon character as well as Kraglin in his brother's films, Guardians of the Galaxy.

Dart (Flula Borg)

Know Who Are Suicide Squad Characters | 27c106d7 dart | married games movies / series | batman, cinema, dc comics, suicide squad, movies, flash | suicide squad characters

Dart, played by Flula Borg, is a former German Olympic athlete who, for unknown reasons, got into crime. He created an arsenal of dart-based weapons and faced off against the Green Lantern when he stole a prototype solar-jet Ferris Aircraft, defeating it. Dart was later captured, however, and was recruited into the Suicide Squad. Trailers suggested that this character might not last long and that Harlequin might have something to do with his untimely death.

Amanda Waller (Viola Davis)

Know Who Are Suicide Squad Characters | 141ca915 loves | married games movies / series | batman, cinema, dc comics, suicide squad, movies, flash | suicide squad characters

Viola Davis reprises her role as Amanda Waller, the commanding officer of Task Force X, is a powerful political figure involved in various spy agencies and law enforcement agencies. Throughout her comic books, animations, and live-action appearances, she championed and created the Suicide Squad based on her belief that powerful individuals posed a threat to humans.

-- Advertising --

With no superpowers or special abilities, Amanda Waller's greatest weapon is her unwavering influence and determination, which helped her face the most dangerous individuals on the planet and manipulate them to work for her. It's safe to say that without Amanda Waller, any Suicide Squad squad would do her name justice before her mission even began.
