GTA is unavailable at Rockstar Games

Unlicensed songs and the infamous Hot Coffee may have made GTA Trilogy unavailable for purchase

This past week, GTA was unavailable at Rockstar Games. Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition, which had a very problematic release, on the same day it was released was down for a few hours due to the inclusion of “improper files”, according to the information.

The trilogy, which features a set of remastered versions of GTA III, GTA: Vice City and GTA: San Andreas, was supposed to be released on November 11th, but due to maintenance and other issues, the game was unavailable for some time. Rockstar support sent a tweet saying that the remastered package is currently "unavailable to play or buy" while removing "files unintentionally included in these versions".

The tweet didn't say what kind of files it was removing, or how long the game would be down and when the game could go back online, just saying that it expected to replace the bad files "soon". Rockstar also pulled older versions of the games from its store - along with Steam - before the release of the remastered trilogy.

GTA was unavailable on Rockstar? What is the reason?

The information on the website of PC Gamer talk about music files not licensed to Rockstar that were inside the game even though they were unavailable for players to hear. This kind of thing has already been the subject of lawsuits for the company that removed several of its games from digital stores because they no longer have access to the rights to the songs. Until the release of the remastered version, some of the titles in the GTA franchise were not available for purchase.

Another thing that may have caused this problem is the inclusion of the infamous files. Hot Coffee minigame. For those who don't remember, Hot Coffee was a sex minigame in which the protagonist CJ could take girls to his house and have sex with them. The minigame was not available in the released version of the game, but was found in the archives and restored by mods, which was also a reason for lawsuits for Rockstar.

And here we go to court again

Unfortunately, the release of the three remastered games was nothing but tumultuous. The Rockstar Games Launcher went into “maintenance” on Thursday, not only making the remastered trilogy unplayable, but also rendering Rockstar's entire lineup of games, store, downloads and cloud system unusable for more than a day. Rockstar finally restored service to their game launcher some time later.

So far, the first reviews of GTA: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition don't look promising. Reviewers are finding that the game is riddled with glitches and bugs, mainly affecting the game's graphics. Some users have posted their experience on Twitter, and the game doesn't look pretty — since a storm with blinding white raindrops, glaring spelling errors in the original language, even characters from distorted appearance in best remastered Assassin's Creed style, the game has some serious quirks.
