Tips Back 4 Blood: Precious tips for your gameplay
Organize your cards the right way because it can be critical
The card system in Back 4 Blood does not work according to the same rules as in other games. It's important to remember this and treat cards more as advantages rather than random bonuses in a hand. Because of the way the system works, you should take the time to organize your cards in the order you find most useful. For example, at the beginning, you might want to go for cards that increase Copper gain or allow you to highlight useful items across the environment, and save the more powerful damage and health increase cards for later in the race.
You can choose a new card whenever you arrive at a security room. Even if you join a game late, the game will allow you to choose cards for each stage of the level you lost. This means that, with the right deck, you can secure a certain set of advantages every time.
The first card is always free.
Continuing with the previous point, you should consider placing an indispensable card in the first slot of your deck. Everything you know you can't live without must go there. A card that is generally and universally useful as a weak point damage boost, or the card that replaces your standard melee with a knife will never be useful. If you tend to stick with a certain weapon class, choose a card that complements it, such as those that allow for melee builds.
Reload your weapon in each secure room
For some reason, every time you advance to the next section of the map in a security room, the game likes to unload your weapon. You have to manually bring it in and reload it every time. This was something I noticed in the beta and thought it was a bug that will be fixed later. It might still be a bug, but now it's become a quirk, so maybe the developer won't remove it.
It's not a big deal, but it might be helpful to remember in case you run into trouble and end up needing to use your weapon, only to have to wait for the reload animation while you're being attacked by a Tallboy.
Pumps can be better than big ones in some situations
We all love chaos and explosions, especially considering the damage they do to special infected and bosses in Back 4 Blood. But on any difficulty greater than Recruit, you need to worry a lot more about not being surrounded by ordinary zombies. For that reason, I would use a bomb instead of a grenade 90% of the time. It does decent damage and has a long fuse - enough for you to heal while zombies chase you and give you precious breathing space.
Of course, pipe bombs don't help much with special infected, but you can usually count on red barrels, propane canisters, and gas tanks in those cases.
Tool kits unlock doors
Sometimes you will find those doors marked and locked. Back 4 Blood calls them Prepper Stashes, and like everything else in the game, their locations and spawn rates are random. Sometimes you see more of them than you can open, other times it's the other way around.
The best way to prepare for stashes is to reserve a slot for the toolkit, which you can purchase from the vault supplier at each spawn. Sometimes you can randomly find toolkits in the level, but they are competing with some other items that it doesn't make sense to wait for them to appear.
Prepper's Stashes contain a large amount of resources, better weapons, copper, healing items, and usually even a First Aid Cabinet - all useful on any difficulty other than Recruit.
You can and should share ammunition with teammates
A good Back 4 Blood squad is specialized; A team made up of classes rather than random characters. Pairing the right Cleaner with the right deck of cards is where the game really shines, so don't be afraid to specialize.
Normally, this also means that some players will gravitate towards certain weapons. Ideally, these are weapons that complement your passives. You can definitely tell what style of play Turtle Rock had in mind when designing each Cleaner.
But ammo is typically scarce on the Back 4 Blood, so always share the type of ammo you're not using with teammates and summon ammo you can't get. Even if you're not using a shotgun, it helps to keep some cartridges in your inventory in case your on hand teammate Holly needs them in the future.
Unfortunately, there's no way to drop the ammo type and let you know you need it, so try to communicate with your teammates and hope someone gives you a few rounds. To drop ammo, just open your inventory and left/right click on the type you want to share.
You can exchange Fort Hope through the in-game menu
This looks like something out of focus testing, or maybe it was the plan all along. In short, all the functions that the Back 4 Blood's Fort Hope hub offers can be easily accessed from the in-game menu. By pressing Tab on the PC, you can manage your decks, customize your characters, choose weapon skins, invest in Supply Runs and start a campaign/PvP/solo.
Basically, everything except testing weapons on the firing range. This can save you a little time when you have to go back to Fort Hope for more cards.
Keep the trauma under control
Trauma is one of those pesky mechanics that has the potential to ruin otherwise good runs. The more you die in Back 4 Blood, the more trauma accumulates. This simply blocks sections of your health bar that cannot be healed by bandages or medical kits.
Trauma is important for the higher difficulties, not only because it makes you more vulnerable to disability, but also because the amount of damage caused by trauma varies between difficulties.
Some Cleaners are more trauma resistant, but you can also add one or two cards to your deck to protect yourself as much as possible. The only way to heal trauma is to use a first aid office. These are found randomly in the levels themselves, sometimes behind locked rooms and other times just randomly in a hut. Certain security salons also have these healing stations, but the number of free uses they offer varies.
That's why it's best to allow teammates with the worst trauma to get the free healings first, before you can gather your copper to complete the rest of the squad.
You can lower your level to harvest resources
This one is for players who like to plan ahead. Supply Points, the currency that unlocks new cards – the meat and potatoes from the Back 4 Blood – can be grown on Easy Recruit difficulty. As long as you are playing with at least one person, you will earn some points every time you finish a section.
This is a good way to rack up these points and bolster your deck before trying the higher difficulties. Decks, especially specialty decks, are much more crucial in Veteran and beyond, so spend some time relaxing in Recruit to build up your Supply Point stash early on – or whenever you need to.

Back 4 Blood is a first-person shooter video game developed by Turtle Rock Studios and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. It was released on October 12, 2021 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.
It is considered a spiritual successor to Left 4 Dead as it was developed by the creators of the original game and features similar gameplay.
