Carnival Row

Set in a unique world that is part science fiction, part fantasy and part alternative history, Carnival Row is a murder mystery with a supernatural twist. Orlando Bloom plays a detective in a world that resembles Victorian England, where mythical creatures, like fairies and fauns, emigrated to live among humans. It is very fair that this series is among the best Amazon Prime series.

Cara Delevingne co-stars as the tough criminal fairy with whom the detective is in love. It is an elegant and courageous series that moves successfully between genres, while telling an engaging story with complex characters.

Comrade Detective

It takes a minute to understand the concept of Comrade Detective, which is presented as a Romanian TV series from the 1980s, which emulates the exaggerated style of American police dramas of the time. In fact, it is the brainchild of American comedy writers Brian Gatewood and Alessandro Tanaka.

The show was filmed in Romania with Romanian actors and then dubbed into English by American stars, including Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Channing Tatum and Nick Offerman. The creators parodied the excessive machismo of American action, along with the excessive anti-capitalist propaganda of the Eastern Bloc of the Cold War era.

Good Omens

Adapted from the beloved novel by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, Good Omens is a comic fantasy series about the apocalyptic battle between good and evil. The opposite sides are represented by the surprisingly friendly pair of the demon Crowley (David Tennant) and the angel Aziraphale (Michael Sheen). Just for having Neil Gaiman, you already deserve to belong to the select group of the best Amazon series Premium.

The forces of Heaven and Hell are determined to make Earth their battleground, but Crowley and Aziraphale have come to love it and launch various schemes to prevent the rise of Antichrist.

Homecoming

Adapted from a narrative podcast, Homecoming opens its story from the world of audio drama, guided by executive producer and director Sam Esmail (Mr. Robot). The show is centered on a mysterious corporate initiative, which touches people's memories, in the name of improving their lives.

The first season stars Julia Roberts as a counselor who works with combat veterans, while the second season stars Janelle Monae as a woman trying to rebuild her identity. Both are clever and suspicious looks at the dangerous potential for mind-altering drugs.

The wonderful Mrs. Maisel

The title character of The Wonderful Mrs. Maisel is Miriam “Midge” Maisel (Rachel Brosnahan), a New York housewife in the late 1950s who pursues a career in the male-dominated world of stand-up comedy. One of those responsible for this production being among the best Amazon Prime series, creator Amy Sherman-Palladino transforms the show into a fast, fast and colorful ode to the 50s and 60s (especially in New York City), with Midge as a pioneer for women in entertainment. Brosnahan brings the impetuous (and sometimes authoritarian) Midge to life, and Alex Borstein is perfect as Midge's feisty but tenacious manager, Susie.

A Mississippi

Comedian Tig Notaro co-created and starred in this drama series inspired by her own life. One Mississippi is a kind of fish story out of water about lesbian radio host Tig moving from Los Angeles back to her small hometown in Mississippi after her mother's death.

But Notaro avoids the expected tension between the main liberal character and the city's conservative residents, instead adopts a more nuanced approach. Tig finds more warmth than resentment, even enjoying the rhythms of small-town life.

Small Ax

There has been a lot of debate over whether Steve McQueen's Small Ax is an anthology of a TV series or five separate feature films. Anyway, it is a masterful study of life among the West Indian immigrant community in London in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. This already qualifies it to be among the best Amazon Prime series.

Each episode (or movie) is an independent story, ranging from the drama of the Mangrove courthouse to the relaxed party atmosphere of Lovers Rock. The acclaimed filmmaker McQueen (12 years of Slavery) directs and co-writes each part.

Loop Tales

Based on a series of evocative illustrations by Swedish artist Simon Stålenhag, Tales from the Loop envisions a futuristic retro sci-fi world in a small Ohio town. Loop is a mysterious research center, where many of the city's residents work, and its various projects have strange effects across the city.

Each episode explores a different story connected to Loop and its founder's family (played by Jonathan Pryce). The individual parts overlap, but still stand on their own as meditations on the nature of humanity.

Truth Seekers

Longtime collaborators, Nick Frost and Simon Pegg come together for the supernatural comedy Truth Seekers, as co-creators and co-stars. Frost and Samson Kayo play two broadband installation technicians who are also investigating strange events in their sleepy English city.

Like Frost and Pegg's collaborations with Edgar Wright, Truth Seekers mixes geek humor with a genuine appreciation for gender narratives, including some surprisingly scary moments.

Undone

Produced through a trippy rotoscope animation process, Undone is a psychedelic journey in the mind of the main character Alma Winograd-Diaz (Rosa Salazar). After surviving a car accident, Alma may have extricated himself from time, now able to communicate with his father, the scientist, Jacob (Bob Odenkirk).

Or she may just be suffering from a mental illness that occurs in her family. While Jacob insists that his daughter has supernatural powers (and must help him solve his own murder), Alma tries to determine what is real and what is the product of his damaged imagination. It certainly deserves to be among the best Amazon Prime series.

Best Amazon Prime Video series

Of course, defining the best Amazon Prime Video series is not easy, not least because the streaming service offers a wide variety of entertainment, for all tastes and types. As a bonus, we can make two honorable mentions.

Fleabag: tells the story of one is a young adult dealing with almost universal problems from a female point of view: relationship problems, sexual and professional frustration, family conflicts. With an incredible humor and a sensational performance by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, in addition to the breaking of the fourth wall, it is a series that is very worthwhile.

American Gods: Based on the book of the same name by Neil Gaiman, American Gods tells a crazy story: traditional and mythological gods lose faithful to modern gods. The drop in reputation leads one of the oldest idols to join forces to end the fashionable divinities.
