What Does Over the Top Mean?
Acronym for the expression Over The Top, OTT are video and content distribution platforms on the internet. With OTT, any person or company can have their own streaming platform to distribute content without relying on third parties.
If you lived in the 90s, you might remember that, at the end of the year, TV channels featured the movie schedule they would broadcast during the year, right? In general, they were those most anticipated movies that had come out of the theater about 3 or 4 years ago and were in a period of exclusivity on Pay TV and, when the day they would be broadcast was finally announced, guaranteed peak audiences. Some longer movies, such as Titanic, made the TV channel change its programming, taking programs off the grid so as not to cut the movie, or sometimes, they turned the movie into a miniseries, playing it in 3 chapters.
The broadcast of “Rambo – Programado para Matar”, on SBT in 1988, caused Rede Globo to broadcast two episodes of the soap opera “Vale-Tudo”, to combat the audience. Anyone who just wanted to see both programs was held hostage by both TV networks and was divided between channels to be able to watch what they liked. That is: when movies were actually shown, as it was not uncommon for promised movies to never actually get through.
Today, thanks to the Over-the-Top model, that doesn't happen anymore.
Over the Top, or OTT, means this decentralization of the decision power of what we can watch or consume on TV, Radio or other media, without depending on the decision of the “top”. We are, nowadays, “above the top”. Today, we decide what we are going to watch or when, on which platform or vehicle, without relying on a schedule. Nowadays, this fight for audience between two episodes of the soap opera against a great movie has become irrelevant, as each member of a family can watch what they want on their own cell phone, PC, tablet or even on TV.
The TV stations that previously controlled what we would see and when, today are just content producers and make this content available on their various channels, whether streaming service website, TV or website with videos, and seek to draw our attention with the quality and exclusivity of a content.
What is White Label?
One of the main factors to explain the growth of this market were technological advances, and more specifically, the concept of White Label: buy a product or service from a brand and resell it as your own. In the technology market, this means purchasing software directly from the developer and being concerned only with the content available there.
“With greater ease of access to technology, there was a reduction in costs to have a platform adapted to the visual identity itself. This opened doors for many digital entrepreneurs and companies”, explains Daniel Arcoverde, Co-founder of Netshow.me, a reference in the Brazilian OTT market – the eighth largest in the world according to Frost & Sullivan consultancy.
Netflix is the most famous OTT in the market and has the highest volume of active subscribers in the world. However, the format of content distributed in an OTT can go beyond recorded videos. It is possible to contemplate live broadcasts, podcasts, texts, images and much more. “This allows a huge diversity of niches to create their own OTT with content formats that best suit the audience and the moment of consumption, enriching the user experience. At Netshow.me, we have a portfolio of OTT clients ranging from sports, investments, entrepreneurship, dentistry and even dance,” says Arcoverde.
How to Become a Streamer and get my OTT?
In addition, having its own streaming platform allows content producers greater monetization possibilities than social platforms such as YouTube, for example. This autonomy is possible because the platform does not depend on algorithms and rules established by third parties, making the business more profitable. With OTT, you can sell subscription plans and even one-off sales via Pay-Per-View.
Precisely because of these advantages, this model is becoming increasingly used by companies and content producers looking to sell courses and create a digital product track to earn money online. “As the platform is adapted to the brand's visual identity, this strengthens the authority of the digital entrepreneur and facilitates the construction of a scalable and profitable business”, says Arcoverde.
The democratization of this tool for companies and content producers has also led many organizations to seek to replicate the format for corporate communication. “OTT platforms proved to be an innovative solution with great benefits to engage employees and maximize the results of corporate communication actions and events”, explains Arcoverde.
What video formats to use at OTT?
Can you have your own content platform and create your own OTT? Sure! That's exactly what we're talking about! In your OTT you can use recorded and live content in your strategy. Or both! It is not necessary to choose just one of the types – after all, this type of platform allows you to mix both in the best way that pleases your audience or is feasible for you. For this, evaluate the type of content you intend to create, the production structure you have available (and if you intend to invest in it) and mainly, what your audience wants and tends to watch.

Currently one of the main formats used by those who want to start streaming their videos. Here you can turn on your camera and start your content, without needing a lot of editing or trimming. Through OTT systems you can also broadcast live online. In this training you can broadcast online courses, masterclasses, internal training, gameplay and internal communication actions, as well as shows (a market that grew a lot during the pandemic), sports and any other event you want.
Video on demand
Video On Demand (VOD) is the same format used by major streaming platforms such as Netflix, Disney + and Amazon Prime. You have your content recorded and available for your audience to watch whenever they want. You can create your content catalog and constantly feed your platform with new videos from you or partners.
Here is the simple blending of both forms of content. You must create the content in the way that works best for you and your audience. Some platforms, such as Youtube, allow blending, while Twitch is more suitable for live.
What types of monetization of an OTT?
If you want your OTT platform to become a source of income, then there are some monetization models you can explore:
Subscription Video On Demand
Acronym for Subscription Video On Demand (Video On Demand Subscription), SVOD is the subscription model. This is when you become a “supporter” of the channel, paying a monthly fee that the content creator sets. In return, you can receive some type of exclusive content, such as supporters-only videos, emojis or exclusive access to something like an exclusive group on sites like Discord or WhatsApp.
Transactional Video On Demand or Pay-per-view
TVOD stands for Transactional Video On Demand, or the famous Pay-Per-View. Your audience pays for each content they watch individually, with no subscription plans. This can be for highly anticipated or special content, such as a football match or movie.
AOTT or Paid Ads
AOTT – known as Advertising – is the most “traditional” monetization model. In this model, the user does not pay for access and the revenue comes through advertisements that pass at the beginning or in the middle of the videos or on the platform. Basically it's like those TV commercials or YouTube ads.
SSOVOD or Single Access Content
SSOVOD, short for Single Sign-On Video On Demand, is a more closed model of video access. You need to log into a website to access the content. This means that users need to have access to the content generating company's intranet to access it.
