With minimal action, frame rates skyrocket while in high action they can drop dramatically. Without any help from smart technology, this can result in screen tearing.

This happens when the monitor displays part of a frame and the next frame at the same time. You will notice this for sure as the image looks split where the sync is broken. This is because monitors are set to run at a set refresh rate and don't always know what to do when the frame data they receive doesn't match the hardware settings.

One option was VSync, which is simplistic because it tells the monitor to wait for the entire next frame before switching. This is not a perfect solution as it can introduce lag which is very bad for gaming.

AMD and NVIDIA have developed adaptive sync or variable refresh rate solutions to help monitors maintain playback even when video cards have non-standard frame rates. AMD has FreeSync while NVIDIA has G-Sync. Both do a great job of eliminating this issue, but they require compatible hardware to do so.

AMD's FreeSync is more widely available and cheaper to implement, which means you'll often find it on more affordable monitors. NVIDIA's G-Sync, on the other hand, requires certification and goes through quality control to ensure performance and generally results in a higher value on the screen. What are Nits?

On the other hand, if your device never comes out of the dark, you're probably not turning up the brightness anyway, so having more nits wouldn't help much.

We don't use candles anymore, and sticking them in sensitive electronics is a really bad idea, so it's kind of hard to say how many of them you want on your screen without looking at some numbers. As a general rule of thumb, more nits are always better, so all else being equal, you can't go wrong with higher numbers. How much do nits really matter?

Resolution, contrast ratios, black levels, sRGB color, and other factors also affect screen quality, and as long as you're not on the low end of the nit range, you're probably fine. Smartphones/Tablets: 200 to 1000+ nits

As they are commonly used outdoors, smartphones are definitely in the “more nits, better” category. Technically, a device starts counting as “sunlight readable” when it hits at least 1.000 nits, but very few mobile displays get to that point. As a general rule of thumb, anything over 400-500 nits will work just fine on a sunny day, but at 200 nits you might need to find some shade to respond to texts.

Laptops/Monitors: 200 to 600+ nits

Laptops and PCs are mostly used indoors, so they don't have to be so shiny. 200 is on the low end but still usable, while above 400 is above average.
