Review: Riders Republic is a welcome surprise from Ubisoft

Riders republic Review | Riders republic is the newest release of Ubisoft, released on October 28th this year, but this time with a genre somewhat forgotten in the video game industry, which is precisely extreme sports. And this title has enough content and with several modalities and sports so that it is not just a little action and maneuvers game; there is a strength and an effort to make this game fun and exciting for a long time to come.

The game was developed by Ubisoft Annecy, the same subsidiary that helped create games like Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell, Tom Clancy's The Division 2, Assassin's Creed and the winter sports game Steep. Rider Republics is the result of good work that can offer the player to have real experiences of extreme sports, such as cycling, snowboarding, wingsuit, skiing and some others, especially when viewed in first person. This entire experience takes place in an open world environment, where the player can explore different locations and meet other players around the world.

Everything that happens is seen through the cameras of a TV channel dedicated to extreme sports that follows every movement that takes place in Rider Ridge, the place where the sports community is located. In the game, you can create and modify your character with the same physical characteristics as yours, or if you prefer, do it in a way that you find funny. After all, the game gives you that freedom.

It should be noted that this analysis is done through the experience of playing Riders Republic on an Xbox Series S, with 120fps and 1080p resolution. But if you want an experience on other consoles know that the game is available for Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Playstation 4/5, PC, Google Stadia and Amazon Luna. With cross-platform and cross-generation to make your life much easier. Oh, one more important thing: If you buy the Standard version for Xbox One and/or Playstation 4 and then switch to an Xbox Series X/S or Playstation 5, be aware that the generation upgrade is completely free.

gameplay takes practice

A gameplay that takes practice | Riders Republic Review

Riders Republic is a game that has been very well worked on the details of movements and that surprises in some aspects of animation, but in terms of control, beginning players will have a bit of difficulty understanding the standard game commands. When I say standard commands, it's that control scheme already pre-defined by the game's developer and, if you see the need, you can change it according to your taste.

However, in specific sports such as cycling and jet wingsuits it is already a little difficult to get the hang of it. Cycling in racing challenges is very simple and there's nothing to fear because the game doesn't offer rough and difficult turns, it's all very smooth. But when it's a maneuver test, it's very complicated, at first, to be able to do well in the first attempts.

In jet wingsuit it is difficult to get the button layouts right. By default, the analogs are inverted and that's why the first move is awkward, that is, if you lower the analog your character goes up and if you raise your analog your character goes down and this will be slightly worrying at first, but nothing a little more than practice does not solve. It's a simple point, it's not a problem, but that you take it into account when playing for the first time.

That's where a very important game mechanic comes in: rewinding parts of the track. Yes, if you run into a tree, fall off a cliff or simply turn your character into a Kamikaze, you can resume from the last checkpoint and retrace your course or maneuver. This feature saved me several times and thanks to it I was able to enjoy my gaming experience even more.

In other sports, I didn't see any difficulty with control, super quiet and fun to use, especially skiing and snowboarding, where maneuvers are simple to perform and with a greater chance of success.

Speaking of maneuvers, they are all very simple to perform. A lot of times it is even pleasurable to perform certain maneuvers. I have more experience with extreme sports games and found it very simple, practically as it should be. For this, I asked my girlfriend, who has no experience with games like that to try and the result was the same. So, regardless of your experience or lack of it, in extreme sports games, you will do well. I see this as a positive point.

A fantastic setting and good physics

Riders republic review
A very beautiful game graphically speaking! | Riders Republic Review

A point that draws the attention of those who are playing is precisely the part of the game's setting. It's all very beautiful and very well done, even in those details where we don't even care. All the tracks and even the social hub, where you share space with other players in real time.

The game is excellent when we talk about landscapes, tracks and the most diverse designs of ramps and handrails. You feel amazed by the scenery, to the point of wanting to explore each stretch and also practice other types of maneuvers. Each sport has its appropriate environment, such as snow scenes for sports such as skiing and snowboarding.

Among the landscapes, we can note the presence of landmark places in the United States such as Bryce Canyon, Yosemite Valley, Sequoia, Zion, Canyonland, Mammoth Mountain and Grand Teton to make a more familiar environment for North Americans and also bring us a a little reality and an extra dose of a more radical spirit.

In terms of physics, the game also does very well and, no one with more property than me to talk about it, because the amount of times I've tested the physics of the game by hitting walls, falling off cliffs and doing wrong maneuvers at wrong times , it was really impressive. Every time this kind of thing happened, the game went very well and I have nothing to complain about.

In fact, I'm happy to see how Ubisoft started to care about community feedback to improve on these physics issues, which was a heavily criticized point and one of the big problems of the French company that apparently remained in the past.

Good audio, good soundtrack but…

A very beautiful game graphically speaking! | riders republic review
A very well-crafted audio, but… | Riders Republic Review

The audio, in general, did very well in Riders Republic. The sounds are very well optimized which makes you feel really down a track at so many KM/h. Both the ambient sound and the sound of the vehicles are very true to reality and match perfectly with the game's soundtrack, while you do your maneuvers at high speed.

Speaking of the soundtrack, we can say that it is impeccable considering that it is an outdoor adventure and extreme sports game. The predominant songs are the genres of hip hop and pop music, some very famous songs and others not so much. In games like this, where we usually play more quietly, listening to a song in some music app on your smartphone, we can discard this idea and enjoy a good little music while having the full experience of mixing the ambient sound and soundtrack.

What left her wanting in terms of audio was the fact of not having a dub in PT-BR. Not that it's something that will interfere with their gameplay, but as a Brazilian, I'm sad when, in the middle of 2021, they still release games without dubs for our countries. But on the other hand, the game is very well subtitled, but there are situations where the character's speech doesn't synchronize with the subtitle and the person who doesn't have the slightest notion in English is left out of what was said in the cutscene. But I can assure you that the times I had this problem were rare. It won't affect anything.

But a game with our language means the game is ready for any region and the investment for a good experience will not be a problem. We are more attracted to PT-BR games and if they had applied that to Riders Republic, I would have no doubts that it would be more successful here. We hope that in the future, in other updates, we can have a little piece of Brazil in the game.

A good variety of modes

Good Mode Options | riders republic review
Good Mode Options | Riders Republic Review

Riders Republic arrived with a wide range of game modes and our expectation is that over time, in other updates, there will be even more so that the player does not run out of options when purchasing the game. Including a journey mode, where you create a character of any shape, even green like the Hulk and go after big brand competitions such as Red Bull Rampage, X-Games and UCI Mountain Bike World Cup in search of rewards exclusives.

We cannot fail to point out that the game has large-scale adventure modes, I say a dispute against over 49 players, totaling 50 with you. But that's when we talk about current generation consoles, Xbox Series X/S and Playstation 5, in addition to the PC. For older generation consoles like Xbox One and Playstation 4 it's a little lower to 20 players. But that doesn't overshadow the wide variety of modes we have within the game already at launch.

Do you know this mode that supports up to 50 players for new generation consoles and 20 for older consoles? His name is Mass Race, and in this mode you have to be prepared for a frantic match, where races will appear in a totally random way where you will have to kill and die to get there.

O Versus mode is quite challenging as it puts you in front of your friends to see who will be the best in a series of events. At the Tricks Battle you'll have to test your skills in a 6v6 confrontation and get maximum points with the most diverse maneuvers. And, last but not least, Free To All mode you face 11 opponents in random events.

And, to my delight, I had no problem with either mode. All were fun and not cloying, as I thought they would be. The playlists work very well, with emphasis on the Mass Race mode, despite being a big competition it is very well organized and fun. Ubisoft got a lot right in this regard.

Is Riders Republic really worth buying?

It is worth it? | riders republic review
It is worth it? | Riders Republic Review

This is the most awaited moment and if you skipped all the threads and went straight to the verdict, please read the threads above to understand even better about the game. If you've read everything so far, feel free to hear our opinion on Riders Republic. The game is really excellent and it was a big hit by Ubisoft. Everyone knows that the company is highly criticized in many ways, for making the games lose their meaning after the release time. But I have high expectations for Riders Republic from time to time. It's been a long time since an adventure game has been as captivating as Riders Republic.

This game is a perfect alternative for anyone who is a fan of games like Grand Theft Auto: V, especially in the online racing aspect, will love a game like this. I would say the experience is close, but with a different twist and with the potential for much more fun.

What is Riders Republic's main problem? For me, it's more than clear that it's the salty value for a game that had the potential to be free to play. Not that the game has no potential to earn your R$299,00, but that you can't imagine a game like this being highly popular on a paid service like Xbox Game Pass, for example? Or even free to play, where the game will become profitable through microtransactions. But nothing to erase the Riders Republic shine.

The game is one of Ubisoft's biggest hits of the year, worth investing in if you play mostly with your friends. So, for me, the game is worth the investment, but it lacked better planning to make the game more popular.
